Check for rust! Get a petrol they are more reliable. Get a post 02 for the better 6 speed box rather than the old Ford 5 speed. Diesels become less reliable once they were fitted with a DPF. Get a V8 the fuel consumption is not a lot worse than the 3.0/2.5 You should get mid 20s , 30 mpg average is possible if you just do long trips
I had a pre 2002 S-type 4.0 V8 SE for 3 years followed by a 2004 4.2 V8 SE for 10 years and 130,000 miles. There is absolutely no doubt that the later car is far better in so may respects. Shame I got rid of it in some ways because the replacement was an XF 5.0 V8 Portfolio and the ride was much inferior.
If I wanted an S Type now I'd go for the V8. If the earlier 4.0 then essential that the timing chain tensioners have been replaced. OE were plastic and prone to sudden failure. Later V8s were metal, the very latest being preferred.

It is true the petrols are generally more reliable than the diesel, just due to the nature of all the addition emmisions gumf fitted to them
If you do 4k per year a later diesel with DPF is a no no.
I've had a 2.5 manual sport, a 4.2R and now a cheap high mileage 2.7D.
Superchargers are amazing but budget won't allow for a nice one I suspect.
Make sure it's not rusty. Wheel arches and sills. The plastic sill covers make it hard to detect later cars tend to be better.
Any more specific questions post them up here.
Will help if I can.

Came here to post exactly this topic, finding myself drawn to an s type. Last few cars have been revvy sporty cars and I fancy a bit of a change, at least until i find something else anyway. From a couple of hours researching I like the 3.0 v6, not dead against the diesel but I'd rather petrol. A v8 would be awesome but would be stretching the budget too much really, same as the OP I'm looking at 3k, ideally under tbh. Things to look out for? I'm 23 so a bit young for the jag stereotype but I fancy trying one.
