SO I just bough a 2007 S-Type 2.7 D

Its an SE, (not the Sport I prefer)

Its not got Xenon's or heated screen / seats. (options which I think are essential)

But I sourced it through the trade for £1650 @ 100k miles (which I think is pretty cheap) with no rust but a number of minor issues.

Figured It might make an interesting forum thread as I work through them all over the coming months.

Good on ya! I loved mine - had it for 5 years / ~90,000 miles and went all over Europe in it. Marvellous cars.

I still have some new suspension / chassis bits in the garage for it - let me know if you want them!

I had an 04 4.2 V8 Sport great car, loved it to bits. Passed it on to a mate of mine he's still got it and it's going strong.

A classic in it's day and still is IMHO. smile

Yep, the 4.2 V8 I had for 10 years and 130,000 miles was a great car. Better than its predecessor 4.0 V8 SE.and its successor XF 5.0 V8 Portfolio, both of which I had too.

So the car had a strong smell of diesel, service book shows a cheap service done 3 months previous changed the fuel filter.

A quick check and the filter is leaking, cheap crossland brand.

Replaced with an OEM "Man" Filter ( same brand you get in a Jaguar box ) one problem down.

So the main thing that needs to be looked at before I decide if I'm keeping it is a very loud clonk / knock from the rear end when the gearbox does the 2 1 roll out, or when going from D to R.

This could be prop centre bearing, gearbox its self, or most likely rear diff. All pretty bad.

So Im under the car and I spot something odd...……………

Its got an XF rear diff not an S Type one.

They are visually very different, S type one is fat and has bolts around a rear housing, XF one is very thin and has bolts around the side by the N/S output shaft.

Well turns out under warranty it had a replacement after the originals were no longer available, modification inc new longer drive shaft all done when the car was still under 3 years old.

So my first thought is, ok its not the diff, but inspection showed it was massively loose in the rear subframe.

Should have had some new shorter bolts fitted, but the originals were reused, they run out of thread and tighten up, but aren't holding anything.

Bolts removed, cut 10mm off the end and back in, tighten to 200Nm and hay presto clonk fixed. Amazing,

Next job now I know its got a good drive line, is to sort the rear suspension.

its got a light knock over bumps and the rear end wanders giving the steering an always on move feeling.

While on the ramp it was spotted every bush on both rear arms has excessive play(wander) AND the lower damper bushes have up and down movement ( knock )

New rear arms and bushes ordered.

wavey You got there eventually smile

I had mine for six years and loved it. Only when you drive a current 'Jaguar' do you realise how good the S-Type is.

Interestingly mine had a replacement diff too, following a NSR shunt before I had it, but it never gave any problems.

Currently enjoying XKs; if stocks of those run out I might get a Panamera.

Porsche is very Audi underneath, not a bad thing, just not sure you will like it.

XKR for you next I think.

I had to wait until Stype Diesels were vauxhall omega money before I could commit.
It's not the same as the supercharger I ran for 4 Years, but has the same jaguar feel I had been missing.

I do love the S Type, I love the way they look! It looks like quite a bit of corrosion underneath. Might be prudent to get it cleaned up and protected.

The S Type will be a sought after classic, I'm sure.
