Just had the MOT and one of the advisories was Nearside Front Upper Suspension arm ball joint has slight play.

Not being mechanically minded will this require just a replacement ball joint or will the complete unit (arm and ball joint) need replacing?

Finding the parts wasn't the issue.

The question was do i need to replace the complete unit or just the ball joint.

If it's a later X150 car (the alloy body ones, 4.2 and 5.0) then Jaguar don't sell the ball joint or bushes separately, they're only available as a complete unit with the wishbone. I'm about to do both the left and right upper wishbones at the rear end of my 5.0 XKR because the boots around the ball joint on each side have split.

The days of separate ball joints in suspension arms are long-gone I’m afraid. Plus, if the ball joint is shot, the the metalastic bushes will be too.

Replaced lower balljoints and upper balljoints separately on my dad's xkr x100, along with all wishbone bushes. So the above statement isn't correct.

In reply to OP find a good local Jaguar indie, MOT pass standards can be shocking.
Get a full check over and report from someone that knows the vehicle.
Chances are top wishbone bolt will be partially seized. They can then give you a better idea of vehicle condition.

You'll need a 4 wheel alignment as well.

That car was designed 26 years ago ffs, and based on the XJS in many ways. So the statement is correct. A modern car it is not. rolleyes

If it is an X150 then it shouldn't need alignment just for changing the upper wishbones, there's no adjustment there as far as I can see.

Thanks for the replies guys.

It's an X150 and a complete unit has been ordered.
