x type general opinions

Hi Nick,
Dont see hundreds of X-type enthusiasts defending 'em so I thought I would throw my 2pence worth in. Drove one only once - a tuned 3 litre. Suffered from a lack of oomph, a big lack of oomph - even tuned. Handling OK-ish but didnt have the chance to push it. Ride quite choppy and un-jag like. Dont know about depreciation but suspect it will be steepish. IMO there are better run of the mill supermarket/motorway cars out there. Probably would have been more enthusiastic about it if they had stuck a supercharger on it and called it an X-type R.

Just taken delivery of an X -Type, not the quietest, not the fastest, not the best screwed together, but the most comfy for me and hamdles well with 18" rims, 40 profile tyres and sports suspension.

Though not a diesel, I regularly drive an X-Type 2.5SE. I find athlough the steering is vauge, it sticks to the road like sh*t to a blanket and has a nice range of umph (IMHO).
The best bit is the engine noise when you're accelerating - it has a nice hard edge to it. Which almost makes up for the lack of exhaust note.
Rides just fine and has a very capacious boot too.
But still not in the same class as my XJR-S

yep,much as I thought.I gather its a mondeo chassis so probably quite un jag like.
Its a bit unusual for me because I've never had to go through the decision process of choosing a practical car.
I can get one at a 30% discount on new,so I better go and drive one and see.

I own a 2003 2.5 Sport from new and it's great, no problems in 2 years except they tend to wear inside of front tyres and this a known problem for the X, it's a heavy car, up front.
Forget the Mondeo story , it has less than 18% Mondeo parts at the last count, the S type has 42% Lincoln in it and I know which car I'd sooner have a as a donor. No doubt the purists will complain when the new XK comes out as a cut down floorpan of the XJ, it's modern economics if you want a bespoke car pay over £100,000 and buy a Bentley GT Oh! that's a VW Phaentom in disguise, the DB7 was an XJS in drag.
There's a new more powerful diesel due in September. The my 2005 is a major improvement on the launch 2001 my, anything after 2003 seems to be solid well built, no it's not like an XKR but it's not £60,000 it's 20-30K and recently the x type has been winning awards in both europe and the states.
Given fuel costs in the UK the diesel will depreciate the least and as Fifth Gear give it the top award the other week as the most desirable car in the small exec sector beating Audi, BMW, LEXUS and Mercedes, its street cred is rising. It's a typical jaguar of late, the s type and the X type have both improved since launch, the new XJ has taken it a step further by getting it right from launch, the new XK should be the same as its underpinnings are donated by the XJ!
Buy an X and be unique in the supermarket car park next to the dozen BMW 3(SILVER) or soulless Audi A4 or
falling apart C CLASS or LEXUS (Toyota), I gaurantee the jag will be the one the little boys point too in the car park because it's happened to me, the car looks different from the german/jap boxes

It is by far the best car I have driven, but I haven't got the widest range of experience, and could not tell you how it compares to the 3 Series, C Class etc.
Many Jaguar enthusiasts drive XJ's or XK's and then slag off the X type for not being as good, it's not supposed to be , see the difference in price.
The X type is a heavy car, and I sometimes feel that I need more power than the 2.5 litre engine provides, so god knows how the current diesel version performs.
I would either wait till the more powerful diesel comes out, or get another car.

yep looks like the new deisel is the one to wait for.
I've taken the performance comments on board and I'll be happy to live the cars limits.

Thats exactly what I'll be telling the magistrate at my 2 upcoming trials for speeding.
Maybe I'll see if you can get a limiter fitted to it to stop me going more than 70.
