xkr 4.2 or 5.0
Discussion
I would say yes; I went from a late 4.2 to an early 5.0 about eight months ago. It's not just a bigger engine; the transmission is better, the chassis is more communicative, the brakes are much better, the interior is higher quality (depending on spec, my old car had the standard interior, the new one has the full leather etc.) and it is much, much faster, more so than you'd think for "only" another 800cc.
Both are lovely cars and I still consider myself lucky to have had the 4.2. The new car does make the older one feel a bit softer, less sharp, more a GT than a sports car. Let's be honest, neither of them are a Cayman or a Lotus in terms of the handling but the 5.0 feels like a significantly sharper tool than the 4.2. That being said, your preferences may well be different, some will appreciate the slightly plusher, more comfortable ride of the earlier car.
Do drive at least a couple of both variants though.

I have a 2007 XK 4.2 and am now looking around for a 5.0 L of about 2010 vintage. My present one has 20" wheels and uprated sound system which is well worth getting. I find the ride supple and even on 20" wheels very comfortable owing to the cats suspension.
I don't think you will be disappointed with the performance of the 4.2 but obviously the 5.0 is just that bit quicker and as the other poster said the interior is a bit higher quality.
As for values, I think they still have some way to fall, especially the higher miles examples.
Low mileage ones can be found but obviously command a bit of a premium.
Gearbox oil and filter need changing at 60,000 miles so make sure there is evidence that this has been done.
Just reread your post and see you looking for XKRs. These are seriously fast but the gearbox advice still applies.
Good luck with your search !
