I bought an XJ350 in October. It had 112,000 miles and 6 months MOT. Lots of money spent on it in the past, but no service since 2016. I went for it as it wasn't a lot of money (3 grand) and I liked the dark blue paint, black leather combination. The paint is unmarked, the wheels nearly so and it looks good- although some might not like the fact that the previous owner has put R badges on and it has R seats, even though it certainly isn't an R

In the period in which it had not been serviced it had been owned by the dealer who had only done 6,000 miles. Prior to that it had been owned by one lady who had spent £££

Good points:

Seems to be absolutely rust free
Just got through its MOT again, albeit with an advisory for front pads
Sounds sweet and there are no obvious mechanical problems, although the coolant needs topping up every 1500 miles. That seems a lot to me (I'm no mechanic)

Bad points:

A long time since the last service
4 cheap, although matching Hifly tyres- do have lots left in them though
Nothing in the service records about the gearbox oil being changed
Rear view mirror has fallen off (my own fault). I've had it glued on again twice by a DT teacher, but hot weather has done for it on both occasions. I've got a cheap suction one now

Question:

I am prepared to spend £1000. Where should it go?

I don't want to make it go faster. It's not a car that makes me want to go fast. I had a couple of BMWs when I was younger for that. I just want to make sure i get a couple of years out of it. With no work done in three plus years, what are the necessities?

Thanks for any advice. Any ideas about where to take it would also be appreciated. I live near Sevenoaks.

Thanks

Ed

If it was me, I'd have a full service done with gearbox oil/filter.

If the tyres are an issue, eBay them for no reserve and buy some decent ones.

That's it. I've no idea on tyre prices/sizes but you should end up under budget, barring any nasties discovered during the service.

Sorry, can't help you with where to take it.

Well it’s aluminium bodied, so rust is not an issue. The only rust concerns are the subframes, and that tends to be surface rust.

I would get all fluids changed, prioritising the gearbox with a machine flush.

Service it, drive it, keep your £1k for the niggles that you'll discover along the way. It'll be stuff you don't expect, on mine I've had:

Aux heater pump
Rear ABS reluctor rings
Bonnet cable
MAF sensor
Spark plugs

It adds up. You didn't mention which engine it has?
