Firing up the old Girl X308 XJR

Afternoon all.
After charging battery and having her off the road from September time last year, the good weather motivated me to start her up today. All was well until I went to put her in gear. The J gate seemed extremely sticky. After a bit of persuasion I managed to find R and N, but I couldn't get it into D. I had to move the car forward slightly so drove the stick over to the manual side. It now is stuck between D and 4 and won't let me come back through D to get to P again. The dash also displays gearbox fault and it won't let me take key out of ignition.
Is this reeaaaally bad.... Or just another Jag anomaly after a period of off-road time?
