Does anyone run or have run a R Sport XE, i'm looking at replacing my Mini clubman and the only alternatives i can come up with at the minute are a newer clubman, XE or C350e.

It would be the petrol version i would consider and ideally the 240ps version, cold climate pack, sunroof and meridian are probably the only other options i'd consider. Does anyone remap these given they are the Ford engine ?

Got an 18 plate 25t a month or so ago. Got cold climate and black pack but no sunroof (don't miss it) or Meridian. Not many of these cars around secondhand so finding a loaded one before it sold was beyond my patience. Definitely did not want diamond cut wheels again so mines black with black wheels which seems to split opinion.

Nice place to be on a long drive but I've had to buy a lumbar cushion. Relative lack of grip compared to the GTD I came from, had a couple of moments already and this morning spun the rear wheels in the dry with hardly any provocation pulling out of a car park, I would not want to be in this car in snow, despite it having "snow mode" and low traction take off.

I would look at the XF, slightly more expensive, but prob better residulas, so if financing check to see if you can drive an XF for similar money to the XE. XF feels a more premium drive.

R Sport decent trim, but these Jags are let down but cheapy interior. Check out Portfolio XF for the soft grain leather. New Checkered Flag edition supposed to be a bit of an interior upgrade.

Can plumb for the AWD models to cater for all year round motoring. These cars were recently selling with 30% discount? Currently 0% finance plus decent deposit contribution and as much as you can get off dealer.

I would only look at XF-S. Awesome V6D. One yesr old cars, ex-jag £55k+ retail price now up for mid-£20k’s, still with 2 year warranty....

Go and enjoy the process.

PS the 2.0 petrol or diesel engine is the in-house JLR Ingenium unit.

Heya,

I ran a 2017 XE 25T for 2 years, one of the last with the 240PS Ford engine.

I went for Portfolio spec instead of R-Sport as the standard sound system that was in the car I test drove was, in my opinion, notably below the standard of the rest of the car. Portfolio comes standard with the Meridian upgrade and R-Sport doesn't, and Meridian is definitely worth having. I didn't have the cold pack nor sunroof but didn't miss either. The heated seats were nice, and the wheel didn't stay cold for long. Portfolio also comes with better leather than the R-Sport, and electrically adjustable seats.

In my time with the car, I did look for, but did not find anyone who did a popular remap for the car. It's too different from the Ford installation - engine management I think - and so the Ford tuners didn't offer the same upgrades for the XE. That may have changed by now though. I found the power for the standard engine was enough to enjoy the chassis, was plenty for overtaking traffic and more than punchy enough on the motorway. It's not a memorable engine at all though, and I can see the appeal of a remap for it. The later Ingenium engined ones are probably a better bet. I also never got on with the gearbox. The same box in the Giulia (or almost, anyway) is much more responsive.

The car was very comfortable on a round trip to Paris and entertaining on b-roads. The suspension was my favourite part on the car, as it managed to be cossetting, communicative and accurate all at the same time. I never found out if the R-sports have stiffer suspension. They definitely do on the diesels but I'd read somewhere that all the petrols had the stiffer suspension. Whatever I had, it seemed a good compromise to me. It's a car that coped equally well with a drive in the mountains and the trip to get there.

The car does seem to be set up to spin the back wheels on demand even with TC on, but ultimately it coped fine with the tiny bit of snow we had in the South East this winter. In winter mode the car coped comfortably with particular traction concerns, including getting it off and on the icy drive.

Also I'd recommend sitting in one and driving one. I've heard a few describe the interior as cheap. Personally I found it more interesting than the average 3-series, and more luxurious than a Giulia. All but one of my passengers also really liked the interior. So I'd suggest sit in one and make up your own mind. I'm sure it won't feel as classy as the C350 though.

Then drive it before making a decision, because the chassis is the best part of the car, by miles.

Kiseca, many thanks for your detailed reply, i agree the C Class will probably be more classy but its also a lot more common. I want something that has a bit of character, at the moment its still between this and a Clubby.

I have a 25D AWD Rsport, Love every bit of it.
The approved used XE's are true value for money.
As you are looking for a car with character i dont think XE would not disappoint at all. its a car which is Joy to drive, Dead gorgeous to look at also not so common on roads. Personally i dont think any C class has the good driving dynamics & character of XE.
