Hi,

Does anybody have experience of sending their car to JLR Classic?

I have a much-loved 2001 XKR convertible which has reached a point in its life whereby I have to either move it on or treat it to a bit more than just servicing. It’s becoming a bit tired in a number of areas, so I’ve been thinking about sending it to JLR Classic - not with a view to returning it to its 2001 condition (which would be lovely, but would stop me from wanting to use it) but to attend to problems that the local main dealer is not really geared up to manage.

I’m expecting that JLR Classic will do a good job, albeit for a very high price.

Has anyone sent their car to them? If so, how did you rate the experience and the finished job?

All views welcome!

Many thanks.

had a tour of their workshop in Sept and yes they do exceptional work for exceptional prices. I suspect that the cost of doing major work would outweigh the value of the vehicle. All the vehicles there seemed to be of a high value.
I would ask around and find a good body shop or maybe checkout the Jagforum or the Jaguar Enthusiasts club
maybe check this out

I had a quote for the restomod of my XJC that is currently underway elsewhere. They quoted me £480000!!!! 😂 it is a very impressive facility. I looked into how much they would charge to service the car as per the intervals required as the car will live up that way when done and the cost was £1400 for a minor service and £2000 for a major service.

At a highly respected Jaguar restorer the same job will be coming in at about £70000 and the servicing is £200 and £300.

I’m sure their standards are exacting but the prices are particularly stiff

Many thanks for the advice. It’s what I imagined, although perhaps even more expensive than I’d expected!

Any work done on the XKR would make no financial sense at all - it would be purely for the hell of it.

I’ll think a bit more about the other options in the meantime...

Not 480k that’s for sure. It’s hard to say what a restomod is worth because you narrow your market because all of the warm beer drinking beard wearing purists choke and run

Nothing drastic.

The front heated screen no longer works, the leather on the driver’s seat bolster is a bit tatty, a bit of paint is needed on the rear arches...

The car’s bigger problems in the last couple of years have been electrical. The adaptive cruise failed and this put it into limited performance mode. Oddly, this problem (after much expenditure and many months of faffing about) somehow disappeared. The central locking is misbehaving now. I suppose these things are going to happen, but I was keen for someone who knew the cars really well to eyeball it from end to end and advise what needs doing next.

The first owner ticked all the options boxes when he bought the car. It’s a really nice example of its type, so I’d prefer to keep it going in a reliable state, if possible.

However, I don’t think I’ll be spending £480k on it!

Well that lot will be well under that and it’s not really the sort of work that I would bother jaguar classics with. Any decent modern Jag specialist should be able to sort that.

That’s true. I’d been a bit put off the local main dealer (Ipswich) after they struggled with the cruise control problem. They were great for everything else, though, so could handle the other bits.

I don’t know of a good independent specialist who might deal with the whole lot in one go, hence my wondering about JLR Classic.

I have seen Tom Lenthall get some excellent reviews & recommendations on the XKEC forum, he's based near Reading, and seems to handle everything from minor servicing to restoration and race prep...

Many thanks for that advice. I shall explore that option, as it will probably work well for me.

My new to me 2006 xjr is with Tom right now. My first time use of a jag specialist and he comes across as a pragmatic chap, and has so far prevented me from spending unnecessarily . (Although i made an executive decision to replace all coolant hoses, regardless of age)

My restomod XJ coupe will be going to him when it’s nearly finished to have an emerald ECU fitted and make it run much better than Jaguar ever could
