X308 Idler gears.

Greetings and Felicitations for the Festive season! 
Can someone shed some light on the idler gears for me? I've just replaced the belts on my car, and I see there were two options listed for belts, depending on whether there are plastic, or metal idlers.
What's the deal with that?
Mine has plastic idlers, are the metal ones an upgrade?
