Apologies if this has been covered, I did find some info on this earlier, but I'm buggered if I can find the page again.
My local Jaguar dealer workshop Boss, here in Mallorca has been super helpful, and tells me the trans fluid I need is Shell 3403-M115.
I have a new gasket and filter ordered, also a dipstick.
From what I've managed to find on interweb, the box holds 9.5L, but I'll only manage to drain half of that out, with the remainder staying in the torque converter, so the plan is to change it annually.
I figure if I put back what I manage to drain out, then check it with the dipstick, I should be OK.
But my question is, has anyone done this, and is there any special method?
TIA. smile

XJR box needs ordinary Dexron 3 transmission oil - nothing special.

I'll dig out the change procedure for you and post later. smile

Right, Mercedes W5A580 gearbox in the 308 XJR

Drain oil
Remove all 6 sump bolts inc the one that holds the exhaust bracket
Twist ex bracket clear
Remove sump pan
Remove oil filter. No bolts - push fit
Clean sump pan
Fit new filter
Fit new sump pan gasket
Refit sump pan.

Locate dipstick/filler tube underneath bulkhead trim in rear of engine bay
Add 4.0 ltr transmission fluid through tube
Start engine and idle
Add 2.0 - 3.0 ltr
With engine running cycle through all gears just once
With engine running check level on temporary dipstick
Should be on the bottom mark when fluid cold (<25C)
Add fluid if needed as quickly as possible to bring to bottom mark.

Recheck when cooled down

Fluid should expand to top mark as it heats to 80C

If checking when hot use top mark.

Messy job. Have loads of rags and newspapers around and always work with clean hands and tools on auto transmissions.

Its worth having a look at the torque convertor and rotating it, some of the early xjr v8's have a small drain plug. Just draining the sump only gets about 3.5 litres from memory.
In France I found the local MB dealer to be very helpful for the parts, and they offered to check the oil level if needed, they also found it a source of amusement that Jaguar had to go to Mercedes to get a gearbox to cope with the power!

Yes Sir, You'll see I posted another thread with the MB part number for the oil. I wanted the exact same oil, as I'm very anal when it comes to oil and filters, and I hate mixing it.
Everywhere I went to get the correct spec. oil, they tried to sell me something different, as the shell stuff appears to be discontinued.
I ended up buying it from the local Merc dealers. I plan on doing the job over the Christmas Holiday.
