XK fuel consumption
Discussion
The daily work horse is in the garage having some work done so the XK has been the daily commuter for the last week.
The journey is part motorway, dual carriageway and some country roads. 45 miles each way. Speed limits were stuck to for the duration.
For the first few days i left it in 'D' and found i was getting an average of 23.1mpg. Even for a 4.2 V8 i thought this was a bit st.
Yesterday i reset the trip computer and put it into 'DS' and used the paddles for the journey again staying within the speed liimits.
When i got home it showed an average of 28.3mpg
What's that all about?

Most of the time the standard mode isn't the most efficient, it is however the cleanest for emissions purposes, and on more modern vehicles will be the auto selectrf default, but with more modes on offer that do invariably give you better performance, economy etc, at the cost of more pollution.
I use D and in mixed mileage get about 28mpg.
I don't like paddles, preferring a big stick in the middle, but will knock it down a cog to overtake.
Modern Jags (of which this is one, just) don't have an instant mpg display, but in a car that does you'll see an increase in mpg if, once the car is up to speed, you back off a tiny bit. Same speed, less fuel.
