Hi all, considering getting into an XJ but due to the mileage I do it'll need to be the V6 diesel. Anyone have experience with these? I've searched a bit and they do sound fairly temperamental so it'd be reassuring to hear from someone who has ran one for a while without issue, if that's actually ever happened.

Obviously standard responses about getting the petrol and the cost isn't much more in the long run and so on and so forth, but lets assume they don't exist in some parallel diesel-only misery world.

Thanks.

If you consider stuff like EGR valves and MAFs to be service items at the appropriate mileage and factor them in to your costs, you probably won't be disappointed.

Before buying my S-Type 2.7D in 2012, my research indicated that, on average, it may need EGRs at 80-100,000 miles, MAFs at 100-110,000 miles and one or both turbos at >150,000 miles. The first two were spot-on.

I sold it after 6 years, running it from ~50,000 to ~140,000 miles, all trouble-free with the minor exception of a failing battery.

I also, for a while, looked after a fleet of 4x4s - the Discos spent less time out-of-service then the Pathfinders and Shoguns, and several ran to 250,000+ without major hiccups.

Others, of course will tell you that they're unreliable, like the threads already on PH with major disasters at low mileages; it does happen. How lucky do ya feel?

I ran a 2.7 (S-Type) from 70K miles to 130K miles over six years. I had the cambelt changed at around 100K as recommended, and had no problems with the engine, turbos or DPFs.
