Hi Our neighbour has just bought a new petrol 2lt XE which is very nice. On startup hot or cold the revs increase to 1500rpm for a short while without touching the throttle. Can understand this on a cold startup but not when hot. The dealer says they all do it. Does any other XE owner have this feature and if so why does it do it.
Thanks

Can't comment on Jags, but on a Mazda 6 I used to have it would do this, hot or cold. I was told by the dealer it was for emissions, gets the car and cat up to temperature quicker so results in better results during emission testing, resulting in lower VED for the consumer.

It’s normal.
Have aXKR 5.0L & does the same.
Done research & found that this is done to save over stressing cam chain apparently. I also wait till idle before selecting drive. About 30 seconds when cold to save it lumping into gear.

My XF 25T does this. Drops to idle much sooner if hot.

If started maybe 5 minutes after turning off, the refs will be at normal idle but later, even though still quite hot, I do get that short period at 1500

My XF 25T does the same with quite an alarming metallic rattle from something to go with it. However it drop to normal idle within a minute.

I have found though that 4K Miles into ownership the engine has really become quiet compared to the first few thousand miles of ownership. Love it!!

I've always assumed that my XKR did this because some 5 year old was left in charge of the marketing dept. at some point and thought that rev'ing like that was cool. irked It's probably the thing I like least at the car. I was tempted to say that's it's the only thing I don't like about the car, but I'm sure there must be something else, I just can't think of it at the moment.

I've had a 4.0 V8 S Type, a 4.2 V8 S Type, and a 5.0 V8 XF, all of which did the same thing: higher revs on cold start up for maybe 30 seconds then down to idle revs.

I dislike this "feature" about my car too, it makes me cringe every time I start it. Mine goes up to 2000rpm when cold, which seems rather unsympathetic to me, and I find myself gritting my teeth as I hit the start button.
