x-type problems

Bought a 2.5 x-type sport 18 months ago and after my first service(20k) the following need replacing/doing:
NSF Front tyre (worn on inner)
both front discs and pad replacing (worn on inner)
Steering wheel out of alignment
Geometry required.
My gripe is are all these related to the steering being out of alignment, thus should be covered by warranty?
Car has done 20k bought when had 8k on the clock and supposdly it had a Pre delivery inspection which included tracking etc done...
Car is a 53 plate so less than 2 years old...
£500 woth of work for a car less than 2 years old..!!

Trouble is pads, discs and tyres are consumables and aren't covered by warranty. It will be their word against yours that you 'may' have hit a kerb/object resulting in the misalignment after you picked the the car up?
If you drove that far without checking for wear on your tyres as routine maintenance and must have kmown the alignment was out then you must shoulder some of the blame???

My partner bought a new Merk and found that after a few thousand miles the tyre wear was out, the dealer said there was not a problem.
I took the car to an independent garage and they said all the wheels were out of the range.
Showed the print out to dealer who adjusted all the susspention but still charged us saying that it did not come under the garantee!

Deja Vue, I had my X type 2.5 SPORT 2003 owned from new(03 PLATE)23 months old car in for its 20,000 service in Hull last Saturday (23/4/2005)
Guess what I needed:-
2 front tyres worn on the inside
2 new front pads
2 new front discs( apparently mine had rusted because my car was parked for weekly periods, you can't drive it all the time!!!!)
brake fluid
They also wanted to do the geometry a further £112, I refused believing my own geometry would be changed by my wife when she heard the bill.
£587 and that was with out the service

Hull use to be a fishing port, am I smelling something fishy here, co-insidence my a**e, WS2048T get in touch, I agree all this work on a less than 2 year old car. This is mirror image servicing.

My father has just bought an 02 2.5SE and the guy who sold it to him showed him reciepts from a main dealer for new pads and discs recently fitted at the front.
This car was owned by a leasing company in Manchester and has done 52000miles.
He took it to our mechanic (who is an independant Jag specialist) for a pre-purchase inspection and he reported that the tracking was out and that there was wear to the inside font tyres.
I see a strange pattern emerging.
But is this just a dealer con or a real issue?
The only problem I knew of on X Types was wearing of the bearings in the wheel hubs, which (if you went to a dealer) meant an entirely new hub assembly (just bearings if you knew someone better).

I have done 50,000 miles on mine, I had a full 4 wheel alignment done at 36000 which showed alignment was out. I talked to my independent mechanic and he recomends to have a full alignment check at least every 12 months due to the state of the British roads. I changed tyres at 36000 miles and thave found acceptable wear on the Pirelli's after 14000 miles

The X-Type (4 wheel drive version) is pretty tough on front tyres in my experience (Racing Green Cars - interest declared!).
Obviously, the fronts not only steer the car but they also put drive down on the road as well. "Yeah right" you say "like any other 4 wheel drive car".
But there is a difference. I am not at work, otherwise I'd give you the figures. Those of you who have a Driver's Handbook to hand will be very surprised to see the front and rear weight distribution of the car. (Someone please have a look and print it on this thread).
Once you see that, you will see why it is critically important to check the tyre pressures regularly, and to ensure that the suspension geometry is spot on. And if the steering wheel isn't straight, that's the first clue that something is amiss.
If you own an X-Type and haven't looked at your front tyres in a while, put them on full steering lock. We have had a couple of X's in for service with 5 mms on the outside edges and wire showing on the inside edges !! Slightly Scary, because the owners didn't have a clue how close they were to a blowout.

ws2048t : Check to see if the actual advised Toe settings have been "revised" by Jaguar.
From my experience of owning an S-Type. I was unsure of the tracking feel since day 1. I asked my Dealer about it and they said I would have to pay for tracking.
I duly paid this but felt no improvement.
Now, 1.5 years later and with a total of 18,000 miles since new, I am informed by my Dealer that I really need 4 new tyres. I had my car tested by the AA and they also noticed "uneven wear".
BUT ! I have since found out that Jaguar has "revised" the front AND rear toe-in settings on the 03 S-Type.

I have heard from another S-Type driver that the cost of his new tyres was met somewhat by the Dealer - but only if you notice in the first year. Guess what I was told when I commented on the wear rate. Yup, that's right, "that's not unusual, I've seen that before".
I drive gently mostly in town. 18,000 miles for 4 tyres is not what I expect.

Interesting reading this! I have had my 2.5 Sport for 2.5 yrs from new and it is now approaching 90K miles with a full Jag history every 10K.
I would say that I drive the car 'enthusiastically' (!) and average 20K miles for the fronts and around 30K for the rears which despite the 40/60 torque split supports the idea of most of the mass being over the front wheels.
I have always had Pirelli Asymetricos on the car and have had the geometry adjusted twice in the time I've had the car - never experienced severely uneven tyre wear, but had noticed that the car's turn in was less sharp and that it had started to understeer more readily and follow cambers more (something it does as the tyres get closer to the wear indicators) plus a tendency to wander more on Motorways.
Incidentally, I always run the tyres at 'full load' pressures (38/39 all round - buggers up the ride but makes the turn in much sharper!).
I have been told by the dealer that it is very sensitive to both tyre types and pressures as well as correct geometry.
