I am doing some research before buying an XK or XKR in a few months’ time – a coupe probably.

I was initially intending to buy an ‘Approved Used’ vehicle for the benefit of a predictable outcome for a warranty claim (ok, maybe semi-predicable), by paying a premium over non-franchised seller’s prices.

But looking at the latest T&Cs that I can find for Jaguar’s ‘Used Warranty’ (05/15) it appears that any single claim is limited to £3,000 including VAT. It seems likely to me that this would not be adequate to fund a serious engine failure or the like?

I have asked two franchised dealers locally for the current T&Cs but have had no response yet.

I am now reasoning that it would be more rational to set aside the extra £s I would pay a franchised dealer for the benefit of a warranty that is capped at such a low limit to go towards ‘self-insuring’ for whatever needs doing in the two-year period that the initial ‘Approved Used’ warranty runs for.

I have assumed the Sale of Goods Act will offer some protection for major latent major problems for the initial months and for this reason, I have discounted private sales as an option, although I realise I could bank more £ into the ‘self-insurance pot’.

I realise there is no definitive correct answer to which route I should take, but I would be grateful for any views that support, or otherwise, either option.

Thanks

As far as I can see there are two types of used car warranty available, dependent on the age of the vehicle.

Jaguar Approved for vehicles under ten years old. Claim limited to the value of the car.

Jaguar Select for vehicles under twelve years old. Claim Limited to £3k.

Of course there are always exceptions, but you'd be very unlucky to have a major engine problem on the 5.0 V8, it's one of the finest engines Jaguar have made.

We are both right !!

The wording is contradictory in the warranty document 04/15.

Of the the three statements in that document, two say £3,000 per claim with cumulative claims up to the purchase price and one says any claim up to the purchase price of the car.

Please see below for exact wording:-

SELECT EXTENDED WARRANTY INCLUDES:
• Cover for vehicles of any age up to 100,000 miles
• Mechanical and Electrical Breakdown Warranty
• £3,000 individual claim limit including VAT – up to the purchase price of the vehicle in the aggregate
• Up to 25,000 miles per annum from mileage at purchase
• MOT Insurance

Then it seems to get better, only to disappoint later ☹

MAXIMUM CLAIM LIMIT
The Company will pay both parts and labour at warranty rate up to the sum equivalent to the purchase price of the vehicle:
• Any individual claim up to the purchase price of the vehicle.
• The sum of all claims made shall not exceed the purchase price of the vehicle.
• The maximum claim limit is inclusive of VAT provided the Warranty Holder is not registered for VAT purposes. The VAT content of any claim will not be paid where the Warranty Holder is a VAT registered company and/or individual
The next mention of limit reverts to the first statement at £3,000

MAXIMUM CLAIM LIMIT
The Company will pay both parts and labour at warranty rate up to a sum equivalent to the purchase price of the vehicle:
• Any individual claim up to a maximum of £3,000 including VAT.
• The sum of all claims made shall not exceed the purchase price of the vehicle.

I would like to think the middle statement would prevail but I have my doubtsfrown

Having owned an approved-used 2010 XKR for 4.5 years I would have no hesitation buying another one privately with no warranty, provided the seller is a decent sort and the car has been maintained by someone I can trust.

The forums I use (http://www.jaguarforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=53) indicate almost no horror stories, and only the occasional minor niggle. The engines and gearboxes seem bullet-proof and there seems to be no Achillies heel with these models.

This afternoon I changed the rear brake pads myself and it was no more difficult than it's been on any car I've ever owned. For the performance and the specialness of these cars they're remarkably 'normal' to maintain.

If you choose carefully I'd have thought you'd have no problems serious enough to justify the cost of a warranty.

The XK150 is a reliable car. So I wouldn’t be too hung up on the warranty wording. There isn’t much that goes wrong with these cars. The AJV8 engine is essentially bullet proof. I would buy from a Jag dealer, mainly because the more ropey ones (lack of care) won’t ever go on the forecourt of a Jag dealership. Independants tend to have those, with a more colourful history imho.

Jaguar Approved used, will be Cars less than 5 hears old, FJSH, warranted mileage, serviced, MOT’d and with a 1000 mile exchange policy. Yes, you will pay more, but that choice is yours. A nice private sale would be an equally good buy.

Good luck.

^^ My thoughts too, whether for an XK or any other car.

The X150 finished production 4 years ago. How many are likely to be on main dealer forecourts?

Prior to buying my XKR last year I viewed a car at a Jaguar main dealer. The people were all very nice, but the condition of the car fell short of what I expected at such an outlet,

I bought a car in better condition at an independent The car was a main dealer part exchange but at over 6 years old not something they'd retail. It came with an RAC warranty, but the only "fault" has been failure of the illumination of one of the vanity mirrors.

Just the last of the ‘14,’64 & ‘15 plates. You may well find older, low mileage part-ex’s on the forecourt, but these won’t be the Jaguar ‘Approved’ cars, meeting the conditions of the jaguar scheme, but just sold as seen through dealer.

This is the Select warranty, for 10 year old + vehicles.

A dealer can't sell 'Sold as seen', there has to be some kind of warranty.

The AA warranty that came with my XK from Chiltern worked well when I needed to claim for a failed wheel bearing. It only covers labour up to £40p/h but apart from that they were easy to deal with, efficient and consistent.

There are currently 22 XK's available as Jaguar Approved Cars.

"Jaguar Approved" has just won the What Car Award as the best Used car scheme.

It may be, but it will be added to the purchase price!
