Seems normal for urban driving - the Fuelly website suggests that the S type is capable of up to 40mpg in some cases, but that’s obviously more motorways than town driving.

I have the 3.0 in my car and I rarely see 25mpg if I just drive locally, it usually takes ~10 miles of A roads just to get to 40mpg, so whilst 22mpg is a bit annoying, it doesn’t suggest anything is wrong with the car.

With regard to improvement, you could start cheap with a bottle of diesel injector cleaner, about £10, didn’t do any harm to my car, but no noticeable benefit either. Long term you should look at a remap, if you’re keen on keeping diesel, otherwise you may find that a petrol returns the same mpg round town, but costs slightly less to fill.

Mine averaged 38 but that included motorways too.

Are you driving for economy or speed?

Hi I drive for economy, I have done oil change/filter, plus new air filter, ( are there any other breathers/filters on the engine that may need replacing!

Take it for a run on a dual carriageway at 70mph. You should get 40-42mpg. If not then something's wrong.

TBH, that statement means nothing. You need to include the duration you’re driving for and weather there are any hills to go up or down. Diesels in the winter can can take 10 miles to warm up, during which they will drink fuel.

I had 2 x 2.7D S Types a few years ago. Both averaged 35MPG over the 4 years of ownership. Be aware that cold weather will impact fuel consumption as well as short journeys. Both took an age to warm up to running temp. normal according to the main dealer I used.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I guess the XJ diesel will be something similar with the same block fitted?
