Hi, so i’m fairly new here but here it goes. I want too buy a 2004 x-type the 2.5 v6 manual with every extra possible (except the satnav tv thing) all thats wrong with it it has a small tear on driver side seat about 2inc, and when i went too view it it had what looks like fresh clean oil patch under engine bay. The seller took it too his garage and the machanic cleand it all ( closer inspection showed the cat,and sump was socked in oil,,) now the seller claims after the steam clean and left on tick over for 20 minutes there is no oil leek. I’m a bit suspisious of this and just want too know is this a common thing on the x-type? Maybe a oil filter gasket or am i getting swindled by the seller. Also any info on this perticula modle woould be welcome. On test drive there was no knocks from drive shats or noise from diff or transfer box just disks a bit rusty and felt like a fast car. When i say fast i mean i come from a diesel astra-1999 gti-currently a diesle rover 75. With all that info is this car a relible buy for £995? Cheers

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of PH. I don't see how steam cleaning the sump wil fix an oil leak but whatever the outcome I hope you secure your first Jaguar. I'm on my 5th biggrin

NB: One adage that comes to mind is 'If you're not sure walk away, the world is full of second hand cars'.

Oil won't leak when running? Not in my case anyway, my rocker cover gasket, timing chain cover and tensioner were all leaking badly but only when engine off.

Same with my gearbox, both seals shagged a shagged fill plug washer and hairline crack as it was overtightened, no leaks when running only when off

Possibly sump gasket. It leaked on mine and i put it in for replacement rather than do it myself as I would normally do. 04 onwards have a strengthened transfer box with a flange that means the box has to be disconnected to change the sump gasket. Jolly good opportunity to change the transfer box lube. Expect a bill of £6-800 as there's a lot of labour.

If it's leaking enough to drip then I'd walk away unless there is an obvious leak from somewhere other than the sump.

In the end it was left over oil from a previous leak it had it was fixed in 2017 so that explains it. I bought the jag and i’m very happy with it. Lovely smooth on idle engine nice power and the AWD is a dream. The only thing now is the breaks are a bit spongy when car is running. Car stops fine i cant press pedal too the floor but it is spongy. And the tracking is slightly out when wheel is put strait it goes slightly left( fairly common too me as almost all my cars have done this ) £920 paid thanks for all your replies and advice it was a godsend in this buy and helped me a lot. Regards paul

Well done. The X and S Type were alway pilloried by the media but I think they're great cars, and now very cheap.

Brakes on the X-Type always been cr@p, some go for a different pad. Enjoy.
