Jaguar V8 X308 Noisy VVT Units

I've been reading up about these and found a few articles, some suggest changing the viscosity of the oil and even one where the chap says he disconnected the unit! I have the same clatter sound on start up which clears with a blip of throttle and wanted to know if anyone else here has had any experience of sorting (cheaply if poss)
