Hi I have a Jaguar V8 4.0 1998 and on initial start up I do believe there is a ticking sound from one tappet that clears with a blip of the throttle, oil and filters have also been changed which have helped quite allot but its still there, any ideas on what a job like this may cost and what kind of work is involved?

Cheers

No hydraulic tappets on this engine, so if it goes away after a blip of the throttle, then this needs investigating pronto - like, the day before yesterday! Could be the VVC unit on the right hand bank but more likely a top tensioner about to give way. Do you know FOR SURE if the tensioners have ever been changed for the later alloy bodied ones? The earlier plastic ones were prone to cracking. I was assured mine had been done but I now know otherwise - don't trust assurances without paper evidence.
Have a read of Jaguar Steve's excellent run down of all potential problems on this forum - don't put it off,
Ian

It sounds like timing chain tensioners to me.
