Had one of these on hire yesterday. Very disappointing.

Diesel engine was very diesel, internal plastics looked and felt cheap. Noisy at soed. USB socket not able to deliver enough power to keep phone alive...

Drive ok apart from that.

Dropped it back when passing the airport last night and given an A6, which is probably a size bigger, but same premium standard and even as no Audi fan, the Audi was far superior...

Totally comparable segments for cars, yes indeed...

Try it with a bottom-spec 3 series.

Really? Why?

An entry level XE 2.0D SE 163BHP is £30,245 with approx £3,000 of discount available = £27,000

https://broadspeed.com/new_cars/Jaguar/XE/Choose_N...

That £27,000 would buy you a 320d M Sport 193BHP is £33,350 with approx £6,000 of discount available

https://broadspeed.com/new_cars/BMW/3-Series/Choos...

Hardly "bottom spec"?

Different segment but both premium...

3 and C both superior to the jag...

For example the plastic shiny gear knob surround flexed to light pressure.

I thought the A6 was very st. If you actually care about how a car drives. Plenty of very cheap secondhand cars which would rung rings around the Audi as a driver's car.

Can't really specify that as a hire car. I want a vehicle similar to what I booked which is capaabke of a few mod cons and importantly with Bluetooth and charging capability

Still it is nice to sample some different cars.

I'd agree the a6 was not a scintillating drive, but compared to the XE it was a definable improvement. But so would have been a Mondeo (which is what I booked).

I had an XF courtesy car in March and that seemed comparable for interior quality with the 2010 A6 I owned until 2014.

The XE ought to be competing with the A4 for interior quality. And the smaller the Audi the fewer nice plastics there are.

I think the general consensus is that the XE in its market sector isnt as good as an XF is in its.

The C7 A6 is getting on a bit these days, having been launched 6 years ago.

I'd actually go so far as to say that the B9 A4 actually has a nicer interior than the A6.

I think they've carved out a reasonable market percentage for themselves. The XE is the weak link though - at least relative to extremely competent competition.

Eventually the lure of the Jaguar badge will run out, just as it did with MG. There's a limit to how much heritage you can throw away before people wake up and actually notice that a Ford is just as good.

The engine surprised me. It was for a premium car very 'diesel'. Again direct comparison to Audi, as that was also 2.0d.... No comparison at all Audi far superior.

Just to throw a little more into the mix i have a new jag XF R-Sport trim (one up from bargain basement) and everyone has BMWs and Audis in the office and most comment how nice the interior is in the XF. Sleeker than the A6 which i personally think is very boring.

The main reason i went for the XF was the way it drived, the way it made me want to look back at it once i'd parked it up. When your in the drivers seat it made me feel like the car wasnt a big, lumping exc saloon, felt smaller and connected.

I'd agree totally about the feel of the XE - I'd read the reviews and was interested in buying one - then got one as a courtesy car when the XKR went in. Not impressed at all - especially the handling, which I thought was meant to be its strong point. Twice I've had one and both times just didn't like it.

Recently had a courtesy XF with the 180hp Diesel which I took on 3-day trip to Oxford (so along drive) and, although I agree that the engine at idle is terribly clattery, the rest of the car I really ended up liking. Still don't like electric steering, but I think that's a losing battle and I did get used to it by the end.

TL:DR - XE: Not nice IMO. XF: Significantly nicer place to be.

Similar opinion in my post here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Having since moved to an S5, nothing would now make me consider the new XE S with the 375BHP V6.

Reminds me... In common with Land Rover...

They give you a nice shiny pop-up button to choose the gears... It looks flash, it looks solid.

I touch it. It's fking cheap plastic painted silver. Disappointing ever time.

My XF has a nice aluminium one with a leather top and rubber grips on the side tongue out

Had a 25T R sport a few weeks ago as a courtesy car when the F Type went on for service and was very impressed with the performance and handling. Sounds very different to the diesel version. My wife is about to change her mk2 TT, went to look at the mk3 and found it disappointing so we are getting a test drive in the new XE R sport next week and may well consider one.
