Used jaguar warranty
Discussion
Has anyone on here managed to get a good warranty on a pre owned jaguar, I was thinking of spending about 40k on XKR, but do not want all the mechanical and electrical cost problems that go with it ,is there a warranty out there that actually works. Your experiences would be welcome good or bad.

The reason I ask is I had a 1998 XKR that had a number of latent defects ,the car was great the problems not so, sorry we do not cover that sir. Four generations of timing chain tensioner later. Are the final run of XKRS free from faults ?
They moved the game on significantly with the X150.They are the most reliable cars in their class (large GT). I'm not saying you definitely won't have any problems, because that would be unwise, but a main dealer 2 year warranty will cover most, if not all, things.
One thing to keep on top of is the battery. Lots of short trips or infrequent use can see random warning lights appear on the dash. If it's parked up for long periods it's best to invest in a battery conditioner, something like a CTEK.
I had an S Type V8 4.2 for 10 years. Bought from a JMD with almost zero miles, came with a manufacturer's warranty of course. I extended the warranty for 7 years, cost about £1000 each year. Turned out to be well worth it. Had several major claims mostly to do with gearbox failures, heater issues etc. Never a quibble from the JMD or Jaguar.

Even if its approved used from a main dealer go over it with a fine tooth comb. My XF and previous X were both delivered with faults that the so called 140point check should have found.
In terms of warranty, if they cant find a failed component right away they will not persevere in my experience. I had a bad rear suspension creak on my XF that 2 dealers could not locate. One wanted to charge me for the labour to strip down the towbar that they said was the cause. I fixed it myself (faulty isolator at top of spring/shock). Also had a clunky shock on the other side that they would not fix (nothing wrong sir). I replaced it myself as well to get rid of the annoying rattle.
My warranty has just expired but I wont be paying Jag £82/month for it to continue.

Jag dealer warranty is as good or bad as any other - my experience is a couple of years back when I got a 1 year all bells and whistles warranty. They ended up forking out about £8k in warranty claims in that year - ok I had to fight them for each claim but they always gave in. Roll on to renewal time and they charged me £1100 for a year which I thought was good value considering the claims to date.
Renewed at 60,010 miles - they neglected to tell me that they consider any claim for anything once over 60k miles as wear and tear. Despite several genuine warranty items needing work no amount of battling would convince them to pay out on anything. Nothing on a Jag is designed to last more than 60k. Their words not mine.
ETA: Worth noting that a lot of that £8k was down to misdiagnosis and replacing parts hoping problems would go away. One claim came to IIRC about £3k - I told them right at the start that I thought replacing a rubber seal for a few £ would fix it but computer said no. £3k of parts and labour later plus me having a loan car for quite a while and they finally changed the seal and it solved the problem.

That doesn't sound right? I bought my car as an approved-used with 1 year warranty with 73k showing, I had no hassle with the warranty and they paid out a few times while I had it. I didn't renew though, maybe the T&Cs are different for a renewal.Renewed at 60,010 miles - they neglected to tell me that they consider any claim for anything once over 60k miles as wear and tear. I think you may have hit the nail on the head - although I was promised the renewal was exactly the same as the original warranty it clearly wasnt as they rejected every claimDodsy said:

I've not managed to get the Jag dealer sort out the intermittent problem on my XKR's lights which occasionally complain they can't turn as I steer. But it's never done it when the car's been with them, so I can't really blame them.

Not that I can see. They claim to cover you as long as you are under 100K when you take out the policy.

Yes they claim to cover under 100k but I just wrote off the money I'd paid in the end as my first try at a claim they told me it would be rejected as they rarely allow anything through once the car is over 60k. And subsequently they just said 'wear and tear at its over 60k' for any claim. I didnt have the time or energy to fight them so I put it down to experience. Im unlikely to buy another Jag anyway after having driven a few of the more recent models so I guess its not hurt them at all .

Dodsy,
See my post above. Several of the successful warranty claims were after the car had gone over 60,000 miles without any issues for me. Jaguar's extended warranty ends after the vehicle gets to 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever first occurs.

So we find that the experience of Jag Warranty is variable. I spoke to Jaguar customer services who told me it was nothing to do with them, the Jag warranty is actually a 3rd party warranty with their name on it but they refused to get involved at all. And it really is a direct quote from the warranty company on the phone 'We dont really cover anything after 60k its all wear and tear from that point on' . See my post above. Glad you had a better experience than me, I suspect that the £8k ish of claims the previous year may have had something to do with them refusing any more claims after I renewed.

One might argue that since your car had been made considerably better by the expenditure of £8K, it was then LESS likely to warrant a claim than cars that had not, and therefore a lower risk...! (like people who have been caught exceeding a number thought up by a civil servant in an office will probably drive more slowly afterwards and so should have a reduced premium!)Dodsy said:
