Numbnuts (Dave) had a T reg s type in his workshop recently. BRG with black leather, and a manual.

Interior quality was a bit below the BMW's, but I have to admit, I was mightily impressed. I liked the looks, the way it drove (even though it was only a 3.0), and the interior. Maybe because it was in a good colour, and maybe because I haven't been up close to one before. It just looked so 'different' to anything else.

Apparently the 'stereotype' is 50's man at the golf club. However I don't particularly worry about stereotypes as I currently have a BMW and a porsche so if I had a problem with stereotypes I wouldn't have the two most stereotypical cars out there.....I buy them for me....So, on that note, does anyone rate the S type....

It will be a bit different to the 540...which is a good car and I am happy with it...Just thinking about what to direct my eyes at....Also, I suppose a 3.0 S type will not cost as much as the 540 to run.

Or should I go for an older XJR as a direct replacement in the future....

I drove an M reg XJR. To be quite honest with you it was the nicest car I have ever been in and felt like it was going to take off I loved it... Following that I bought a 3.2 XJ8 - Nice, but didn't do much for me, wasn't that pokey and was probably as thirsty as my current 540.

The BMW is absolutely faultless, and I will keep it until I get probably smitten with an XJR.....The only problem with them is the poor excuse for a boot, 2 kids, paraphenalia etc, just won't fit....

Plus mother in law was 'driven' around in jags for years, and always complains she feels sick in the back.....Good reason to get one then.

I haven't driven a V8 XJR yet. No doubt if I do I will have to have one. But.....I thought the Stype was a smasher....Interior quality left a little to be desired though...It felt like a posh scorpio.

I ran a 1998 V8 XJR as my only car for approximately 2 years.

Absolutely fantastic! It could poodle around town as serene as can be, or when the urge took me propel me at unbelievable rates of progress. It was beginning to get vandalised at work so I traded it for an XKR as a weekend car. However we all (Me, Wife and two boys) still miss the old girl.

If I were you I would forget the S type and aim for the XJR, don't think you'll regret it.

Good luck either way.

Couldn't agree more!
Agreed the boot and rear leg room is a little 'lean', but, that is the compromise for those drop-dead-gorgeous low, sleek looks.
The cabin and boot in as S Type is very high (as most modern cars) which, IMHO, robs the car of the XJ's elegance. Sure you get boot space but you also get that 'fat arse' look
If you parked an XJ next to your 540 you'd find the roof line of the XJ at least 250mm lower!

I used to have an XK40 and thought something a bit smaller, but still a Jaguar, would be nice. Eventually that car came along - the S-Type - and eventually it got cheap enough to buy second hand.
I moved to it from a BMW 730iV8, the theory being it would be a little cheaper to own and run.
Compared to the BMW my thoughts are:
Build quality is not in the same league. The interior plastic bits are cheap and the front wings go 'tink' when you hit them, not 'thud'. It seems like an ordinary car dressed up: not a Jaguar itn eh traditional sense. However, one of the things that bugged me about the BMW was that it always felt heavy, so I guess you can't have it both ways. The Jag steering felt over-assisted at first - a tendency to rollover - but I'm used to it now.
Disapointingly, the insurance is identical and the fuel consumption is not much better. However, it looks super and I'm generally very happy with it. It's a deceptive shape - it looks small, but it isn't. The front seats are a long way back - almost in the middle of the car, which is why the rear legroom isn't great (but I don't sit there!). I think they could have moved the front seats/dash forwards about 3". Visibility is not great, as the A-pillars are thick, but I don't care

So you've driven an M-reg XJR and loved it bud for various reasons concerning OTHER PEOPLE who won't be paying for it.

If you want an XJR get the V8 - think of it as a straight six which has been to the gym to pump up.

When I had an XJ40 some women complained about feeling sick in the back seat (I seem to have that effect ). That problem won't arise with an XJR as the suspension is much stiffer and the ride certainly not as 'floaty' as earlier sensible Jags.

Regarding the boot - who cares!

Go get an XJR, don't faff around with a small engine S Type.

Go on, you know it makes sense

Hi Iain
I like your thoughts however a V8 wouldn't fit my budget at the moment XJR6........not sure as they are getting on a bit now, and I may be staring into a bottomless pit..

Plus, my wife has me by the short and curlies, for example "You have that porsche thing, so why can't you have a normal car as a family car. "

She is currently fancying an alfa 156 sportwagon, which in fairness we have already had one, and it was rather good. Betwixt the devil and the deep so to speak.

Try the pub cred test. Someone asks what car you drive and you reply either:

1) 'I've got an Alfa'

2) 'I've got a Jaguar'

Now, which do you prefer
