X350, what to look out for when thinking of buying
Discussion
Hi there,
I'm thinking of looking at a 2003 XJ that isn't too far away from me but no little about them other than I like the look of them.
Mechanically is there anything I need to keep an eye on? Also what about the aluminium construction? generally is this trouble free or is there potentially big problems?
Thanks very much.

Take a look at this:

On my second one now, overall generally reliable, but not a car to run on the cheap. I have owned the 3.0 V6 and 4.2 Supercharged (XJR).

Thank you, Alec, for your response.I have had a quick look through that guide and it seems most things that do have problems have a fairly easy solution to sort them out.
I would probably go for a petrol option, a v6 or a v8. I have a 2.5 x type at the minute and only get about 20 mpg running that too and from work, this time of year. I don't do a great deal of miles. I understand petrol engines quite well but diesels aren't something I have ever realy got into and don't want to start now.

I recently bought a 54 plate 3.0 V6 petrol and like you didn't really know what to be looking for.
Basically I spent many hours searching the Jag forums such as Alec has posted, the only thing where alarm bells may ring would be the air suspension but with so few faults reported I personally decided to ignore/Not worry about it.
Things I overlooked on purchase were the tyres, sitting there with 4 tyres all having 5 + mil i thought that's ok but after a couple of months I noticed that the DOT is 06. Also try the CD is working,I didn't and it doesn't so it's now set on Smooth radio
Another thing unnoticed in my excitement was on the rear passenger door sill I have a small rust bubble that at some stage I will get looked at before it gets worse.
Also check any messages popping up,mine had "park brake warning light" showing and a new cable was fitted and I've no problem since with this or any other messages in my 10 months.
I keep track of mpg using Fuelly and it looks like the OBC is over reading by 2 mpg. My Av is 25.2mpg but I'm mainly doing short journeys with Av speed of about 25mph (But if the mpg is out,so might be the average mph)
The car it's self is a lovely smooth quiet ride, effortless to drive and very relaxing. The first thing I noticed on test drive was actually how light the steering appeared to be and the performance was quite a shock also. Being my first Jag I guess I was expecting it to feel a bit heavy and a bit under powered but it's none of these.
My blog is fully updated if you check my garage
Really really pleased with my purchase.
