XKR, tell me why I shouldn't
Discussion
Got an itch that just won't go away to get a reasonably priced XKR. Of course it makes no sense whatsoever, my only other Jaguar was a run our S type 2.7 diesel that went wrong weekly.
However, just got a thing, don't do many miles a year, insurance quote was £242 fully comp (less than I pay for my 1.6 Focus), so tell me in no uncertain terms why the Bork factor is going to cripple me.

touching wood the running costs wont be too horrendous. Ignoring fuel that is, which isn't that bad.
It has been the most troublesome car I've owned in a long time mind you... had to get the wheel alignment sorted (50 quid), oh and then the infotainment unit started to crash (major bug bare as you had no music/gps/heated seats etc until you let the car do a hard rest)... 130 quid for diagnosis and software update. Then there was the new discs and pads I had to have fitted... so you see, mostly standard maintenance so hardly bork factor 50, in fact, most diesels will make this thing pale into insignificance with potential and actual bills.
That has been in. Servicing is very reasonable too, tyres not too expensive either.
To paraphrase the yoof, YOLO. Do it, endure the guilt you feel and enjoy it, then flog it if it gets too much but at least say "you done it".

The one I was looking at has an MoT till mid February, so I suggested to the vendor that if he puts it in, and it doesn't fail on anything major I would be there today with the cash, deal done. He however failed to see the benefit (to him) of putting it in for the test.
last test advised Advisory notice item(s):
rear Subframe mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive both rear chassis arms (2.4.A.3)
He reckons the front was worse, so he had the fronts done, and assumed that the testing station got their front and rear mixed up.

Is it one of the first styled XKs or the later model?
If the earlier one I thought alot about buying one. From what I gather:
-Coilpacks can fail for fun, but that can happen to any car
-Gearboxes can be OK but need their oil changing
-They'll look perfect on top but like any Jag during and before that time they will rot out of sight underneath. The latter is what put me off buying them.
-Cam chains, tensioners are a weak pump due to being a simplex change (not too bad) but the N/S bank putting a load of sudden load on the chains during each revolution due to the firing order etc. Quite a few will now be on revised chains and tensioners. It is wise to change the water pump for the revised item too.
-Throttle bodies can go funny on them
Saying that, the car I bought instead also has requirements for welding anyway :whatever: although it is a little different ; an E46 M3.
That said, it a car was going to rise in value I reckon the XK8 would be it.

It was an early car, yes. 4.0 but sounded right, until I asked for him to test it for me, then he declined.
I was willing to pay his asking price, IF he was willing to test it, but he wasn't so I'm not.
The trouble is, now I've been lured by an SL500.....similar money, and a different stance of course but still a nice place to be.
