Great Day at Goodwood House thanks to Jaguar
Location was obviously fantastic (and we were even lucky with the weather as we did not really get rain)

Very warm welcome and good food (wife got the Vegan option which was delicious thanks to chef who came out personally with the dishes for her)

Short briefing and then out with the family with a F-Pace 2.0d AWD R-Sport for 1.5 hours in the English countryside

Very good finishing and materials, like the driving position, love the steering wheel (perfect size and grip)
Booth is very big and all usable and there is even a big space under the floor
First time for me with the new ingenium engine. If you are in the "right rpm range" it is ok with good torque available, economy is good and the engine very quiet. Only criticism is that under heavy acceleration or from standstill there is a lag and it might get a little bit noisy. Guess the 3 liter would solve the issue
Gear changes are very smooth also using the paddles. Car feel very connected with the road and stable but it is not too stiff

After about 1 and half hours we are back at Goodwood and it is now time for some dynamic activities. Did not go for the slalom but when straight to the ice cube. Impressive climbing capabilities with the car that does everything by itself (if you want) after you set the speed

Now rally circuit with helmet on

This is probably the biggest suprise. The car is standard with the 22 inches wheels and road tyres. The noise of the engine is great (it is the Petrol V6) and the car is always sideways (feels very much like a rear wheel drive). Of course the driver makes a difference (and mine was an ex-WTCC) but that was fast and it drove like a rally car!!!

Not my video but gives the idea

Now obviously took the time to have a go on the F-Type coupe. It is a V6S.

New the convertible as drove both the V6 and the V8 at Dunsfold but I am more a coupe person. Sadly police was around and we were in open road so speed limits had to be observed but it is a fantastic machine. Great noise, great "connection" with the car also because you sit at the "center" of it. You come out of it with a big smile. Still the doubt of the V8 remains but I am afraid that it might be too much.

Still have to test the new Discovery 5 (Currently have a Discovery 3) but I already know at least one of the two cars will go in my garage (just need to work on my wife now)

Went on Friday. It was quite a special day and I have been on many. As. Macan owner, but Jag fan the F-Pace is lovely. Insisted on the 3.0 petrol and enjoyed my tour of Sussex.

Rally stage was brief and would have loved it to have been wet, but like you say standard road tyres.

Not sure if these days sell cars, it must be costing Jaguar (purchasers!) a fortune, but thank you for your hospitality.

That is interesting as in the briefing they insisted that as the Macan was out that became the benchmark
So what do you think having driven both?
For me the 3.0d would do!

Jag v Porsche, no competition. Jag need to walk before they run. The F-Paces competition imho is Merc, BMW, Audi, even Kia and Hyundai. The quality of the product is simply not there, the top line models suffer from poor material finishes and now Jag have gone all out for this horrible 'grained leather' with no smooth available on the performance models. Too much nasty plastic and outdated infotainment.

My Macan is a very luxurious vehicle, with a beautifully smooth V6, to Jags raspy V6, a faubulous PDK gearbox v's auto in Jag and the build quality far superior to JLR's. My Macan same price as the F-Pace S. Serioisly pop along to a Porsche dealer and see for yourself.

Shame JLR are building to price and suffering from it. I had a Disco Sport born in this new era, it was unfinished imho and Overpriced.

JLR need to go for quality not volume and sort their dealers out.

C'mon JLR management, you are indanger of ruining a great company. Stop these
Ridiculously expensive, showy, launches and let the product speak for itself

Ouch I guess you did not enjoy the experience as much as we did!! smilesmile

I was curious to hear about dynamics of driving as I was impressed by the F-PACE rally circuit experience. Also braking performance were impressive for such a car

Did not find the material so bad. Plastics in the lower part of the door and in the gloves compartment were certainly not perfect but the rest was ok
I would also like the high quality Jaguar smooth leather as option (the quality of that is unbelievable) but still the one available as a standard fit is not that horrible

The infotainment is much better now. Still do not like the touch approach but it has all the bells and whistles (including remote functions, driving aids etc). I am not familiar with the Macan but the Cayenne was a disasters with hundreds of buttons and ergonomics were terrible when I went to see it.

The gearbox in the F-PACE IMHO is great, very smooth and perfect for that kind of car. In what is the PDK better?

For me the Macan would not be an option anyway. I still think it is ugly (which is personal taste anyway) but it just too small inside (booth etc) and too sporty. For me it would still be a family car with lots of luggage and dogs so space is important. In this respect the F-PACE seems way better (but did not see a Macan inside so can only judge from what I have read)

Personally I quite like those events. Of course they cannot make up for the quality of the product but they will attract people and generate interest. Instead of having a short test drive with the dealer sitting with you, you can enjoy the car for sometimes with the family and also enjoy a few hours of fun and good food. Nevertheless if you tell me do you prefer to pay more for the car and have them or pay less without them I would go for the second option

Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the day at Goodwood. Very special, just that Jag are pitching their product in the wrong price bracket! If they spent a bit more on the product, they can do it, but trying to push an inferior product at premium prices is going to fail....check out the F-Pace forums...

Agree Macan is a wee bit too small and the F-Pace is perfectly sized for us, but once you have experienced a premium product (Porsche not perfect, but..) you have to question how Jag is trying to compete with just hype. I am a huge JLR fan, but I am not alone in questioning their direction and product...

Go test drive a Macan and report back (not the 2.0) ??

The Macan and Cayenne suffer from being ugly imo. They look like whales. Those lights don't suit an SUV. F Pace is miles ahead in design and that counts a lot for many folks. JLR interior needs to be updated though. It doesn't have a wow factor
