Over to you, Laurie...........(he'll convince you, but if you see and hear his car, then be prepared to spend ££££££'s at Racing Green as you'll want one JUST LIKE IT !!!!!!). Go on, matey, convince Simon that he needs an S-Type R......

Hi Simon,

Oh yes – very very enthusiastic about my S-Type R. A superb high speed express with comfort and character. Reliability has been spot on so far – 6k miles in 2 months and no problems. Mine has been to see Racing Green and has had some modifications done, power upgrade to 450 bhp, speedshift (button gearchange), exhausts, suspension lowered and Arden wheels. Not cheap but well worth every penny IMO. Performance is up a lot, and the exhaust noise is just fantastic, and the Arden wheels look the business. Still does around 20 mpg too. It’s a great car mate.

Cheers,

LaurieB

Presume its gearbox is same 5 speed Mercedes auto box as other R cars? (I'm sure I'll be corrected). I hated auto until I had the XJR - best auto box ever! Ultra-smooth changes. In kick down at low speeds have found nothing to beat a supercharged Jaguar (including Bentley Continental GT!). In respect of reliability..........I'd say 80% of Audi's IMHO. But, much more 'interesting' than Audi.

You cannot guarantee any car won't be a lemon or fall apart, whether its an Audi, Porker or Jaguar. Jags are great cars, the later the model the better, therefore only consider the new 4.2ltr 6 speed Type R. Then go immediately and get it suped up at Racing Green.

As with any car, you can't make an informed decesion talking about it, go to a Jag Dealer and go test drive one!

Can't really comment on the reliability - I'm sure there are a handful of Audi drivers out there who have had bad luck too.

With regards to driving your family across France - at least with the Jag, aside from getting there quicker with larger speeding fines, you won't be looking for a Chiropractor when you reach your destination

Oh, and IIRC all S-Type 'R's have the 6 speed auto. The 5 speed in my XJR is great, what the 6 speed is like I can only dream of

Buy one and have fun!

Using the ordinary auto mode gives seriously impressive performance in any of the supercharged Jags. If you want more, then simply press the sport button which speeds up the gearbox responses (and various other bits and bobs I believe). If you want a bit more driver envolvelment you still have the 'J' Gate to manually hold it in a low gear - although to require holding it in second I woould presume you'd be either crawling at 5mph or wanting to see how long the traction control will stay on for

As others here have said, go drive them both. I guarantee they'll feel poles apart both in terms of comfort and performance

Simon,

The 6 speed auto in the latest jags is a great auto box. Silky smooth and slides almost inperceptibly up and down the box in normal driving. If you want to go fast and feel lazy just floor it and the theres a fast double kickdown and you are off like the space shuttle. Better still if you use the j-gate to induce the down shift(s) before you floor it ... and even better if you fit Speedshift and do it from the steering wheel buttons. Go test drive one - I dont think you'll be disappointed.

Cheers,

L

You won't be stuck behind a lorry in a supercharged Jaguar! Problem over.

The independant used Dealers won't have the new 6 speed S-Type R, so don't bother with these. No problem either that your local Jag Dealer doesn't have one. Go straight to the top, give Jaguar themselves a call and ask them to send you one for the weekend.

Call Jaguar Customer Relationship Centre on 0800 70 80 60. Tell them you want a test drive and they will find you a car and if you ask them, will deliver it to your door. Ask for a weekend test.

Keep us posted.
