Hi I have a 1994 4ltr Petrol Jaguar Xj6 x300 which wont start it turns over but wont fire. The 'check Engine' warning light is showing.
The initial fault was the rear rhs door lock was jammed open , ie so door could be closed but not locked but the alarm and central locking etc were working ok. I removed the door lock and sprayed copious amounts of wd40 in the lock finally the lock is now free and working, however I now have the problem of the car not starting.
I read previously somewhere that the micro-switch in the lock might prevent the car from working due to immobilizer thinking the car is being stolen..
the switch sounds like it is working but could be gummed up with wd40...
Unfortunately when i removed the lock i didnt disconnect the battery could this have caused a fault .
For the 'check engine light' i have recharged the battery, disconnected and reconnected the battery, left the negative disconnected for 15 mins, tapped the 2 battery cables together (not when connected to the battery) to reset the immobilizer .
Basically there is no petrol going to the engine..as cant smell any getting through (fuel tank 1/2 full). The fuel tank has 7v going to it , checked at fuel tank sender.
My local garage doesn't have the management gadget nor do I is it possible to buy one where and what price are they if required..

Does the rev counter flicker slightly when you're cranking? If not the Crank sensor may have failed. It's a common X300 problem, have a Google to see what resistance you should have over the terminals as a double check. If it's open circuit replace it.

Thank you for replies...... I started looking for the fuel pump... but couldnt find it and so decided to try the engine again ... low and behold it started first time. kept it running for 20 mins turned it off and returned to fixing the door lock and sunroof... Tried to start the engine again dead... even with new battery it wont start... looking for fuel pump still.

I just looked on JDC for location & EBay for a picture! Nothing on YouTube though.
Seems it's buried in passenger footwell behind a trim of some sort & it looks like it's a squareish plastic switch with a red rubber 'thing' on the top you push down.
If it is that you will feel resistance when you push it & an audible click.

Story so far as of going to press on 1 August 2016....hahaha
Well after it started last I fitted the door lock and it wouldnt start...
So i went through all the checks again, fuses, exchanging various relays that i thought were the right ones for fuel pump etc, resetting the, immobiliser , the fuel pump switch , the door lock, the sunroof switch (which i connected before it died again.) I did everything possible , even put a new can of 'FRESH' petrol.. no joy....
decided to call out the 'AA' well break down service hoping he have diagnostic tool but car too old . 1994...
After listening to all my shenanigans, all he did was unclip one of the air breather hoses on the air in take and squirt 'easy start' down it while i turned the engine over and pumped the throttle... hey presto... it started perfectly ... and kept going till turned the engine off.. thus proving the problem lies in a relay somewhere that is required to push fuel through the engine on initial start up...
So if you are in deep sh.... trouble engine turns over no petrol getting through system ... remove air hose (small hose) off top of air intake before actually gets into engine and squirt 'easy start' down there that might just get you going until you turn the engine off...
still to find which relay it is ... as i swapped over the ones i thought it was with others but still not work.

I hate to be the messenger of woe, but in some of these systems the function to supply fuel from the starter position on the ignition switch is supplied by the ECU itself. When the engine fires it then switches to running position to keep the pump going as long as the engine runs. You will have to check out a wiring diagram specific to your chassis number that should show the inputs at the ECU. This will let you know if it is wired in this manner and check for an output to the pump relay when cranking the starter.Well after it started last I fitted the door lock and it wouldnt start...

yes J.... 'the messenger of woe' luckily we do not shoot the 'messenger' hahaha .... i replaced all the relays with a new one independently, ie one at a time... even the blue ones sadly the car didnt fire... I tried the easy start method and the car started and kept going so as you say it must be the ecu however i dont have proper wiring diagram as yet to check. or proper manual as manual was for the wrong car.. typical haha
