Looking to buy an XF, Budget 12-13k, I've seen the other thread that se3 started, How does the 2.2 stand up to higher miles?
Can't decide whether to go for the 2.7/3.0 or the 2.2.
Part of me thinks the 2.2 isn't a "proper" Jag.
Not too worried about the fuel consumption.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks Andy
P.S. My last Jag was MK10

Plenty of people think an XF isn't a 'proper' Jag, or anything with a Diesel engine and a Growler badge. Can't decide whether to go for the 2.7/3.0 or the 2.2.

From looking over the 2.2 my FiL has it's not too noisy when inside, seems to have a decent amount of power and the economy is reasonable too. Overall - perfectly acceptable, but not something I'd want myself.
Personally, if economy isn't a major issue, I'd suggest a Pre-Facelift XFS 3.0d - there's quite a few in that price range (IMO).
I had a 2.2 XF estate as a courtesy car for a day last year while my XKR was in for some work. Anyone telling you it's not a proper Jag is talking through their arse, it was a lovely thing, very light on its feet, just right inside and plenty fleet enough.
I have also had a XF S 3.0d and there's no denying that was a quicker car but the 2.2 wasn't slow by any means.

Well mine was only a short term experience so I can't comment on how well they hold up to mileage but I certainly wouldn't rule out the 2.2 for use in a family/practical car. The 8-speed box suits it well, allows the engine to stay in the sweet spot all the time so progress was smooth and effortless. I don't really like diesels as a rule but the 2.2 and 3.0 Jaguar units are among the best I've tried.
The 2.7 is quite old now, I'm not an expert but I gather from various forums that the 2.2 is a better thought-of engine.
On the other hand - does it *have* to be a diesel? That budget would allow you a good selection of 3.0 petrol V6 models or even a few 4.2 V8 petrols, including the 420bhp supercharged SV8...

My Dad has an XF 2.2d (2011 (61)) and it's great. Ok, I've driven his and a 3.0d and the 3.0 is quicker no doubt. But the 2.2 isn't a slouch. It sits nicely enough with the 8 speed auto, and has plenty of around town poke and sits nicely on the motorway. Plus the MPG isn't too bad.
All I'd say is if your budget stretches to a post facelift XF definitely do it. In my opinion they look far better (mostly the front and the lights).
No major issues (40k miles) aside a turbo pipe that had to be replaced. And a parking sensor seal failed and had to be replaced. Touch wood everything else has worked fine.

If biggest difference between the 3.0d & the 2.2 is refinement. The 3.0 is silent & vibration free. The 2.2 just isn't. I'm always glad to get my 3.0 back after a service when they've lent me a 2.2, the difference is night & day.
Whichever engine you opt for make sure the car has the spec you want because retrofitting options like rear view camera or cooled seats are next to impossible due to the programming required. The base spec stereo is poor as well so look for one with the Bowers & Wilkins or Meridian system.

I think so, just loved the colour,
Wednesday is very slow in coming.
When I bought my XKR I was just about to go to Croatia for 10 days' holiday so the dealer agreed to hold the car for me until I got back. That was a mixed holiday, on one hand the break and weather were great but I've never wanted to get back from holiday like I did that time before Wednesday is very slow in coming.
