1997 XK8 smoke coming from breather pipe when disconnected

Hi guys,
I've been having some trouble with my XK8 and she even broke down a couple miles from home. I've identified some issues which I have now fixed, but one problem is that I have noticed that when I disconnected the breather pipe, there's white petrol smelling smoke coming from it. I believe this may be the reason why she's a temperamental starter.
Any advice guys?
