I've got a 2006 S-type R (4.2 supercharged V8) which seems to have developed an coolant leak.

A warning came up last week saying ''coolant low'' so checked it and it was indeed low, so topped it up. But last night driving home from work it came on again, checked again today and it's low again.

Also noticed a little puddle on my driveway where i normally park.

Though it still looks half full from the side :

I've just topped it up and placed an incontinence sheet underneath but couldn't spot anything leaking or pouring out after topping up, so i'm just leaving it for a while to see what happens.

Anyone here had similar issue's with their Jag ? Any things i could/should look out for ?

I'm rather limited to what i know/can do car DIY wise and will book it into a specialist in the week, just wondering if i should keep my eye out for something.

Engine temperature light has been normal whilst driving, but then saying that, i only work 1.5 mile away from home so car doesn't even get up to temperature during that drive probably.

Had a similar S type V8 non R a couple of months ago, no leaks from front of car around rad, one of my leaks was from the rear of the engine around the bell housing on the drivers side. Another was from the thermostat housing.

The story was told over here including all the part numbers replaced.

http://www.jaguarforum.com/showthread.php?t=89000

Again I'll go for the thermostat housing and/or the valley pipe which I'm told on the STR is a bit of a barsteward.

Hope you get it sorted. smile

Check the plastic sides of the radiator where the mounting lugs are. They can crack around the lugs. The header tank can crack too. Lastly, there's the valley pipe under the supercharger which gets hot, goes brittle and will need to be replaced at some point on pretty much all 4.2 S/C engines.

Best of luck sorting it - that's a lovely car you have smile

Just had mine done at swallows in Rooksbridge. Mine is same year as yours an 06 so as I'm off to Europe driving around I had it done as a precaution. 10 years is about max life of the valley pipe. While booked in I'd also get the supercharger belt changed as its a 10 year/100k item and any other pipes that are perishing under the supercharger while its out. From memory swallows charged £700 for the both inc vat.

They're not too far from me ...

Do you use them for servicing?

If so, are their prices reasonable?

My local independant has proven to be more costly than Jaj Main dealer.

I used to go there years ago when I had xj40's , after buying the str and receiving poor customer service from jaguar taunton I thought I'd try again. Very pleased with the service I've received and knowledge.
I recently had:
Valley pipe change, 2 other pipes , supercharger belt change, 100k service inc new plugs , all discs and pads changed and a couple of smaller jobs for £1500 inc vat. They also located the lever and adjusted my lights for continental driving.
Would highly recommend.

Plenty of "common" places to get leaks.
If you have not done the valley pipe get it done regardless of source of leak.
Check the top up reservoir, can split and leak also watch for the return pipe fixing at the back this breaks easily and gives a small leak.
Check the radiator at 10 years and 100K miles mine colapsed and emptied its contents onto the M20

Cheers for the replies folks.

It's booked in for this wednessday to hopefully try and find the problem.

I took it for a 200 mile roundtrip to the Sunday services at Santa pod yesterday, following 2 friends in a spirited little drive up there :

It behaved fine but i didn't fancy taking it down the strip, so just drove there and back, no issue's during the journey.

Checked it this morning, the level in the reservoir had dropped a little but still had enough in there to get the cat the to Vets and drive to work after that (about 4 miles).

But when parked in our garage at work it didn't look so good after a few hours :

Not sure if that patch is related.

It seems to trickle from there :

Pointed the area out (how far back it is) with this broom :

So hopefully on wednessday i'll hear what is going on and what needs doing.

Took it to an indie today who pressure tested the coolant tank and we did spot a leak from near the tank where the hose connects to this other bit, so he gonna replace that to see if it's just that hose. He said where i'd been topping it up all the top it's gone everywhere and probably quite a bit ended up in that tray underneath causing it to drop from a few places.

So hose will be replaced and friday and we'll go from there. Fingers crossed...

I had a hose go last week on the X350 R in the same area-ish! It turned out to be a pipe to the heater matrix. I can send you the part number if that helps you out?

Pipe is replaced and he's driven it for a bit and says it's fine now so i can pick it up tomorrow. £ 142, including labour so not bad at all.

He did say the waterpump could do with replacing soon so might get that done before my trip back to Holland next month.

I'm sitting at 72.000 at the moment and do less then 3000 miles a year but will have that pipe done at the 100.000 service.
