Need some friendly Jaguar reality injection. I need to change the XJR, fancy a convertible for a complete change......but need back seats for the ickle ones. So, obvious choice is an XKR convertible. However, I have a horrible itch for a 911. Having driven some and investigated the issues I'm very torn.......what I need is some encouraging Jaguar support. For the price of a 2000 996 cab from a specialist, I can get a 2002 XKR - from Jag dealer. IMHO the Jag is in a league above in terms of interior quality and straight line speed, but I still fancy a change and the depreciation is an issue.................HELP

I believe you are something a Jag specialist....... are you serious or winding me up? I know modern Jaguars are not perfect, but have you read many of the nightmare RMS engine replacement issues over on porsche forum?

I've had a test drive in a 911 cab & it handled very well. Good ride quality but the interior is so plastic! IMHO go for the Jag or perhaps a Cerbera?

IMHO, the age of the porka is the turn off for me. A 5 year old car for £35-40K, which is no longer the current must have shape, with orange indicators, and a crappy interior. urrgh :thumbdwn: Now if you were talking a 2-3 year old C4S in Seal grey, wo-hey

If you ask me an XKR in Ebony/Anthracite-BLACK! with 20 inch detroits/montreals with cream interior and a 4.2 litre Supercharged engine, this is the biz. Rare enough to turn heads, unlike those common 911's.

Don't think you won't lose any money on 911's, the dealers are crooks keeping the selling prices artificially high and the trade -in prices pitiful. 2 friends have lost small fortunes selling them. Then servicing and warranty comes to mind, an XKR with dealer warranty and back up is a good bet. Jags don't loose too much money, buying them at the right price with the right kit is key.

Good luck with the hunt, an XKR is soooooo cool!

I'm not winding you up 800.
This is a very difficult issue when it comes down to what people want or expect from a car.
But if you are asking me which overall is the superior car both in build quality and drivability, the answer has to be the Porsche every time.
This business of the interior being "plasticky" is simply a nonsense. The Porsche is a real drivers car, it makes no pretence at being anything else.
If you prefer the interior of your car to be reminiscent of the lounge in a gentleman's club then you will choose the Jaguar, if you want a cockpit, the Porsche.
As far as engine nightmare's are concerned, and most importantly how they are dealt with when they happen, then Jaguar is in a league of it's own when it comes down to the ability to excel at intransigence.
They are, and always have been, consistently the most difficult and substantially disappointing company to deal with when it comes down to warranty claims.
I feel now that we are all victims of technology, in the respect that cars have reached an electronic complexity that goes beyond practicability when faced with technical problems, the depth of which are substantially influenced by build integrity in the first place.
I have watched both BMW and Mercedes go downhill in the past ten years or so when it comes to that integrity, both are seriously flawed in many departments, but I fear Jaguar are even worse.
At the end of the day however, you pays your money and you takes your chance, so I wouldn't dream of forcing anyone to buy a specific car, I can only give you my thoughts and leave it up to you.
What I will say is if I was determined to buy a Jaguar, and needed an everyday car, I would spend about 25K on a second hand Vicarage 3.8 Mk 2, and buy a 16 valve Golf for commuting and bad weather.
The best of both worlds.
There is a certain irony in the quality that Vicarage managed to achieve, that Jaguar never could.

I traded an XJR for an XKR Convertible in June 2003.

The XJR is a very fine everyday car but the XK is in a whole new league. I suggest buying a late pre-owned in a decent colour, Phoenix Red, and buy some mods at Racing Green Cars.

Can't advise on a Porsche, as I take no interest in German Cars, but I think you would need a Turbo to come anywhere near an XKR.

Good Luck.

in the same boat a couple of years ago and considered 911 then but didnt go for it and got a cerbera - not the best decision in the world financially but fun wise different class - when it was going. The reason i didnt get the Porsche ? felt it was a mid life crisi motor and still feel the same now Stick with Jags - more class
