hello all,

I've put my S-type up for sale as i need to fund another less practical toy purchase.

I'm wondering what i'm doing wrong with price as i dont seem to have had much interest. the car has a full history (stamped book not reams of paper sadly) and has also just been to the local jag specialist for a full gearbox service (this was the only thing they said needed doing)

the car seems a good two grand less than the dealer cars on here currently (I know there are clear advantages to buying from a dealer of course) I'm just wondering if i'm being unrealistic with the price and whether i should be taking it into we buy any car type people to get a bare minimum trade in value?

any advice welcome.

thanks

paul

You don't get much for an S-Type.

2 years ago I traded mine in at a JMD for a 5 year old XF. My S-Type was a 4.2 V8 SE, 10 1/2 years old, one owner (me) 130,000 miles, immaculate (that's what the JMD said) and I got £1800 for it. The JMD has an arrangement with a local Jaguar car seller and on his website my ex car was up for £2500.

Note that I regarded the car as a keeper and I did not want to sell it until I heard from another JMD where the car was always serviced that to get through the next MoT the suspension needed attention, quote was around £3000! Not so immaculate after all, perhaps, although somehow the local Jaguar guy got it Mot'd before he sold it on without any issues apparently. Maybe the car was not so immaculate as the accepting JMD thought!

Hope this helps give you some ideas of values.

R.

My (110k) SE Diesel went to WBAC (with some paint issues) and I got £1200, buyer paid £4500 after trader bought it at auction.

WBAC didn't know about some of the impending issues with it though, which could have dropped it further, and why I didn't sell privately.

thats very interesting pherlopolus, the difference between dealer and private/trade in prices. the last used car dealer i bought from offered a warranty but excluded drivetrain because (i cant see whats inside) in fairness he was very good at sorting minor issues, but the value of that warranty doesnt make up for the big gap between what seems to be retail and private prices. but i guess that seems to be the way it is.

without the paint issues it was £1800, but yes, I was shocked at the difference, no idea what the auction price was though. It had got a FSH and had just had it's cambelt and gearbox just done though, it was becoming (well, had become) a liability though.
