X300 Alarm problem

Folks,
Somebody tried to break into my car and tripped the alarm. The problem was it didn't stop - three days later the council had the car removed - got it back and haven't been charged any money yet. Actually I thought it had been stolen (big panic), as they didn't leave me any messages and it was the police who told me the council had it.
Anyway - is this continuous alarm a known problem? Any idea why it didn't cut out?
I've disconnected the sound unit for now, and hope my neighbours will forgive me (I live just out of earshot it seems). Actually a bit annoyed as a phone call or knock on the door and I could have sorted it straight away, apparently the Environmental Protection people don't contact car owners as procedure.
