Hi all,

I am thinking of getting a second hand XF 3.0 V6 diesel model roughly 3 years old.

I receive a car allowance from work for a car upto 7 years old. So I would plan on keeping the car for 4 years. My budget for the purchase would be around £20000. I have seen a dozen or so which meet my criteria and are dealer approved from jaguar giving 2 year warranty which had 40k or less on the clock over the past few weeks.

I currently do around 20K a year miles so my query is what would the running costs be. My previous cars are a Ford Fiesta, and a nissan qashqai (only 24), tyres are my main concern and later the cost of potential repairs for the second 2 years of my ownership.

Firstly the tyres, the only ones I hae experience with are not 19" and a higher rating based on the specification of the car, what are the likely cost per tyre and would there be increased wear than I am used to. Secondly what are Jaguars like approaching the 80-100k mark on the clock, I assume parts needed for this specification of car would also be expensive.

I have a decent job and relatively acceptable outgoings (living I an area with low house prices helps) but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.

Would anyone advise something different? This seems like the ideal balance of fun/professional/comfortable/reasonable fuel efficiency.

Other cars seems to be missing items from those above characteristics, e.g. Ford Fiesta ST, may lack the comfort to chew up that many miles a year, current car is a little slow but for comfort is perfect.

Looking for advice from people with more life experience than myself!

I've just bought my first XF. It's a pre-facelift 3.0 S Portfolio which has most of the options.It was supplied by a Jaguar main dealer with 52000 miles and comes with 2 years free servicing and a 2 year warranty.

I'm averaging 38ish MPG on my 15 mile commute and 90% of that is motorway. A longer run should see 50 MPG as long as you keep it legal. Not bad for the performance it can offer as it can also sprint to 60 in under 6 seconds if required.

Tyres for mine are expensive as it has 20's all round with wider rears. 255/35/20 on the front 285/30/20 on the rear. A set of Continentals comes in at about £700 but should be good for 2 years at 12000 a year if driven carefully.

Facelift cars are slightly better on fuel as they have 8 gears instead of 6 and the touch screen and Bluetooth are better.

It is a lovely thing to drive. You'd never know it's a diesel. The leather is good quality and the seats are very comfy. The B&W audio system sounds superb and mine's only the 440w. 1200w is fitted to some which will probably make your ears bleed! Later cars come with Meridian audio.

Some of the German stuff out there probably do things more efficiently but the Jag makes you feel a little bit special. Something that can't be ticked on an options list.

My XF ate rear pads. 13,000 miles was all I got out of it.

I'm on 15k with my XFR-S and the rear pads are getting a bit low but will last til next spring.

I use my power and wore a set of rears out in around 12k. The 3.0 diesel is probably as capable of spinning the wheels at low speeds as the V8 is so although most dawdlers could expect more milage, it might not be realistic to expect 30k from the rears. My fronts are lasting well enough but I'll change them at around 20k I think.

I've got 90k on my S-Type which uses all the same wishbones, bushes etc. The rears have all been replaced at around 80k but I like my cars to feel tight and precise.

A ZF gearbox equipped car with 80k is probably in want of a gearbox oil change.

I've no real interest in the diesels but the 2.7 needed a cambelt change at 105k. Worth checking if the same applies to the 3.0 diesel...

Otherwise there's not much seems to go wrong with XFs. S-Types were pretty solid cars with few weaknesses and the XF has built upon that reliability.

I bought my 2011 3.0 premium luxury in august 2014 and have done about 10k miles since.

First off I do love the car it's a great cruiser and feels really special to drive, however if you're going to buy one make sure you have done your research.

Re running costs, its finished the outer edge of both front tyres which were new when I bought it already and the rears are probably down to about 3mm. On MPG you can get up to early 40's on a run, but most of our driving is local and it's getting low 20's. Ours came with free MOTs and jag do fixed price servicing so last service was only £200.

I've lost count of how many times it's been back in the dealer. As an idea it's had numerous dpf full messages, a stack of warning messages, gearbox fault, water in oil, battery low etc etc. It's had daft faults where the rear doors don't unlock (annoying with 2 small kids) - jag have replaced the locking mechanisms twice now and it's still does it on occasion. It also had an air con fault and the condenser had to be replaced. That said, most have been done under warranty, and to be fair to jag they have been pretty good.
