I have tempters.......buying an XJ
Discussion
Hello,
I have the sudden urge to spend 4k on a 96/97 3.2 Sport XJ Automatic. I have had a scout about ebay/ autotrader, and there looks to be a few nice ones about.
I am thinking an already LPG`d one could be a not bad buy to sell in 6months time.
The insurance isnt bad (520) and LPG wont be that bad on fuel. Am I missing something glaringly obvious here? It all seems to cheap to be true / remotely viable an idea. Any work / parts would obviously be done on the cheap / on a budget by me / a local garage.
All opinions welcome. Most I have told today have laughed and said "how old are you again?".....!

You'll find loads of info at www.jag-lovers.org
A '96 3.2 sport for £4-5k is perfecty feasible, should be able to get one with way less than 100k miles on the clock (And make sure you do). Make sure it is totally full history Dealer and/or specialist.
Good points
Body won't rust, trim won't fall off.
6-cylinder engine & 4-speed auto'box are bomb-proof.
Makes you feel like a king
Bad points
That body/trim will cost a bomb to fix if pranged.
Budget about £750 all in for a service at a specialist. DO NOT service yourself, nobody will touch it without full history when you come to sell it on.
Electrics may be mildly problematic.
LPG conversions have mixed reviews in the Jag fraternity.
If you're not keeping it for long then this is the spec you need...
3.2 XJ Sport
Auto
Full dealer history
Full leather (One of the cream type colours)
Few enough miles to sell it on with under 100k.
Metallic paint or BRG
Standard alloy wheels
No mods at all
If you want to keep it yourself for a few years then...
3.2 XJ Sport (Did they do a 4.0?)
Auto or manual (rare - mixed reviews).
Full history - Dealer or Specialist.
If you're doing high mileage thenget something under 100k and enjoy. If you're doing low mileage get the lowest ileage example you can find (Around 40k if you look hard enough should be possible).
Full leather (whatever colour you like).
Metallic paint or BRG.
Either standard or XJR-6 wheels.
LPG conversion if you desire.
Not had any direct experience of LPG conversions but noticed they wer popular on the older XJ40. Haven't realy seen them around on the X300 much. Check that it runs well on both fuels, you wouldn't want to find that on LPG there is less torque for example.
Other thing to consider is that the LPG tank eats into the boot space - does it affect your spare tyre position?
Hope that helps.
Happy shopping
