Finally got round to posting this.

A few weeks ago I decided to find a nice stretch of private road to test the high speed capbility of the XJR before doing some Autobahn miles hopefully later this year.

All was well up to about 135 at which point I started to notice abnormal wind noise from the passenger side of the car. I continued to 145 where the noise started to sound like more of a vibration and I feared the window may blow out, so I eased up.

Now I need to get this sorted 'cos I don't want to move over for Mr. BMW on the Autobahn.

What do you think is the best course of action? Slightly reluctant to go to the specialist and say wind noise at 145, can you find out what's causing it? (Cue trainee on lunch-break trying to hit the limiter on the M25 )

I'm assuming it's the door seal, although it appears to seal correctly and doesn't leak any water so there is no evidence to suggest it. How much is a door seal to replace? Ie' is it worth doing as a just in case measure?

Any other thoughts on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks in advance,

Iain

145mph! Can I come and play on your 'private' stretch of road???

As for the wind noise and vibration, I would think that it is almost certainly the door seal. A bit of physics would say the wind travelling over your car at that speed, creates the venturi effect i.e. low pressure around the car and higher pressure inside, pushing the doors and windows out, hence the noise.

Also, I don't really think Mr Jaguar really thought his mota would routinely travel at such high speeds, after all it is a huge lump of angular metal forcing itself through the atmosphere.

In summary, put up with it!

See you Friday.

I would put up with it if I were only planning on using it in this country. Also, it doesn't do it on the drivers side so there must be a problem on the passenger side.

A thought has just crossed my mind though. I didn't check the rear door seal... Hmmm, have to check it out tomorrow.

Will see you on Friday although I'm afraid the beast will be filthy again as I won't have chance to clean it beforehand. (that's the only problem with Fridays )

Groomi,

If your XJR is only making the noise on one side, get the tracking checked.

Your brick may be zooming along slightly out of kilter.

Just joking actually.

See you on Friday at Elstead Mill where the full R Club contingent will be able to consider this tricky problem with you !!

Wokkadriver may have a solution to offer as his Schnook probably tracks out of true half the time too !
