Hi All,

Looking for some advice. The supercharger on my 80k miles 2001 XK is noisy, a kind of rumbling noise at tickover. I went the route of swapping the the snout and coupler with a 10% uprade pulley. A fun 3 days scraping knuckles and struggling to get everything back in place, but ultimately not a difficult job. Good fun despite the frequent swearing! smile

So it's all back together and running well but the noise is still there so I assume the main bearings inside the supercharger are slightly worn. When I had the supercharger in bits there was a tiny amount of play in the main shafts, the main driven shaft seemed to have enough 'wiggle' to just make a knock noise. I assume this is what is translating to the noise when running although there was no marking on the rotors edges themselves and they still had all their coating.

Would this small amount of play be enough to cause the tickover rumbling?

Assuming it is, and knowing that the main bearings are effectively a non-serviceable item, how do I find a replacement supercharger body. Plenty on ebay but will they be any better than the one I have?

Can I use an Eaton body from a 4.2 XKR / XJR / STR? Would give me more choice and potentially much lower mileages to pick from. My google-foo is failing me on this particular question, I've not found anything that says I can't, indeed I think I can, but I've not seen anything confirming it either.

Any thoughts? I've had 3 supercharge XJRs in the past, not one of them made this noise, even with mileages well over 100k.

Can't say whether a 4.2 charger will fit a 4.0 but if you haven't already then contact Powerhouse in Sheffield, they know Jaguar V8s and superchargers inside out, literally. They'll keep you right.
