Hi all.

A colleague of mine wants to fulfill a dream he has had for a number of years of buying a brand new XK8.

He wants some advice as to which options he should go for that may make the car more saleable in a couple of years and of course, make the car more fun - money seems to be no object (lucky so and so!)

The car has to be a coupe.

Unfortunately I know next to nothing about XK8s so appreciate any advice given!!

Just to confirm though the car has to be the current model XK8 - is there a replacement due soon?

Many thanks in advance

Money no object..... thats useful as in depreciation if he buys new its going to fall off a very steep cliff!

Why not buy a late Aston DB7 V12 Vantage Volante, far better looking car

I have tried talking to him about the depreciation and tried to persuade him to maybe look at Astons, 997s etc but he is determined that he will get an XK8.

Mental I know - but I admire him for his 'heart ruling head you only live once attitude'!

Excuse me if I sound a bit ignorant but wouldn't he be better off opting for the XKR over the XK8 if he's gonna spend that much money?

Forget the XK8, got to be an XKR, suggest the carbon fibre trim option, metallic black, 20in wheels, don't need many options, they are so well specd. New model soon, plus manic depreciation should mean BIG discount?

OK - I don't think it's too late actually as we are up to the stage where the dealer contacts us with a price but no obligation to buy.

So you like black cars with the biggest wheels you can cram in, and what the hell is it with carbon fibre as a decoration. The car you describe sounds like sixty five thousand pounds worth of tat (lowered no doubt, magic trees on mirror etc etc). You think everyone wants to make their Jaguar this brash?
The man is obviously a true Jaguar enthusiast who wanted advice on buying AN XK8. I do not make posts like this lightly, but you sound arrogant when you open with a line insulting a vehicle as refined as the XK8.

There is a MASSIVE thread further down the forum on the XK8 replacement which will be here at the end of the year. This is a completely new car and not a facelift, hence will mean that the current XK8's will take a heavy blow to 2nd hand values.

This is good news if you really like the current shape, as in a couple of months you will see some big deals to be had as the dealers try to offload the last of their stock. This is however bad news for your friend, as he seems to want one asap.

Steady on John! I love XK's of all types, and I love what you have done to your car, it looks fantastic, and I also have great respect for the C5 next to your XK8, you have great taste. HOWEVER, I am entitled to my opinion, which is that I find the XK very colour/wheel sensitive. A good/bad spec in this respect can, IMHO, make the looks of the car range from the sublime to the ridiculous. A smile might have been nice from a fellow Jaguarfile?

Thanks for the clarification 800, that's just me going off half cocked again. Lesson learned, "must be more open minded"

Cheers for the responses folks. Lancaster Jaguar Sidcup will be calling this morning to take the finer details.

Spec of the car will be as follows

Jaguar XK8 Coupe
Dynamic pack ie 20" Detroit Alloys, CATS, Brembo 4 pots, Navigation system
Xenon headlamps with auto levelling and powerwash.

Total price will be approx £49,275.

Delivery is likely to be mid to end March.

I did talk to him about the XKR but he refused flatly!

Waste of money buying an new XK8! I would hold out for the new replacemewnt coupe and in the meantime pickup a used new shape XK8, which already has the toys on it.

From a Jag guy who runs a Dealership, if you want good resale, always buy a Jag XKR, with Cream leather and a soft top.

Why doesn't your mate pop along himslelf and ask for advice if he is that clueless??

All good points however, it has been his dream for nearly 20 years to buy a BRAND NEW Jaguar and he is in love with the XK8 Coupe. There is absolutely nothing that will change his mind (I've been trying for months).

He is going to Lancaster Jag in Sidcup on Sunday to have a chat with the salesman and discuss the final options.

I must admit I admire him for going after his dream no matter how 'stupid' it may be. Might as well regret what you have done as opposed to regretting what you haven't done.

You're only young once etc etc.

IMHO, your friend's been a little silly. I know NEW cars hold a lot of cachet with certain people, but he'd have been financially better off getting a 6-12month old XKR for the same price...depreciation would be a fair bit slower.

But it's a decent old barge, rides beautifully, handles well enough given the pedigree of it...and still looks fantastic in the right colour. He'll love it, whatever engine it's got.

I just hope his wife travels light... ;o)

Totally agree but once he has an idea in his head, then that's it - especially as the idea has been in his head for nearly 20 years!!
