Hello all,

My father and I have just acquired a Jaguar XKR Silverstone Coupe from a family member. The car has been sat in a garage in Eastern Europe for the past 8 years with no use, and mice have had fun in the airbox and above the engine.
We've cleared out all the crap, and everything looks in order except for a 2 wire ABS cable which has been munched by the airbox - which I'm about to repair.
Turning the key to the pre-start position runs all the system checks and flags up ABS/TC issue (from cable fault).

We now want to look at running the engine, and have replaced the fuel filter and drained/refilled the fuel.

What is the best way to go about re-commissioning this engine?
I suggested pulling the plugs and turning it over to get the oil pressure up, but that looks like a bit of a mission (do you have to remove the supercharger part to get to the plugs?)

The oil itself is very clean, the coolant levels are fine and the PAS fluid is also looking good.

Nicasil engine by the way.

Any tips appreciated.

Potentially you may have a problem with lack of compression or bore wash with any engine thats not been run for years. I'd be tempted to remove all the plugs (under the covers on the cam boxes - easy enough to do) and squirt a drop of engine oil down each hole. any 4.0 V8 engine may have timing chain tensioner problems too. Belts and braces says swap the secondary tensioners for third gen metal ones just in case the original ones have deteriorated through lack of use. If you get a rattling noise from the top end for more than a few seconds once started then that's the problem and it needs attention asap.

In this situation It would be nice to remove the plugs and apply a little oil as Steve suggests.

They are under covers in the centre of each cam cover, no need to remove supercharger etc.

However if this is to much of a misson, you can simply unplug the crank sensor, and spin the engine over on the starter for 30 sec or so, to pre lube / build up oil pressure withouth the injectors firing. THen plug it back in the fire her up, good luck.

crank sensor is low down rear of engine between sump and bell housing.

This is a N/A engine but its the same. Coil cover removed, coil out for plug access.

I'd be tempted to squirt some engine oil down the plug holes, and pull the fuel pump fuse before turning it over on the starter a few times,

This should get oil out of the sump and into all the right places, without the injectors rinsing the oil you just put down the plug holes off the bores.

Then put the plugs back in and refit the fuse before crossing fingers and starting it up.

As mentioned, if there are any clattering noises on start up that don't disappear after a few seconds, it may be time to think about chain tensioners.
