Rattly rear on an XF

Hi all,
It's been a while since I posted on PH and I think my first time in the Jag forum!
My XF has been a bit poorly of late since a perished seal in one of the EGR valves put it into restricted performance mode around a month ago. Since then it seems to have developed an intermittent rattle from around the rear passenger side. This varies from a subtle suspension kind of rattle to a more concerning metallic 'ping' followed by a louder thin metallic rattle (kind of like a handful of stones in a can) accompanied by a hot brake like smell.
Jaguar checked it over when fixing the EGR and couldn't find any issues and I've a local independent look at it recently and they couldn't find any suspension issues. I've had everything out of the boot, including spare wheel etc, but the low rattle was still there.
Looking around online, the likely culprits seem to be shocks/bushes, but I'd be pretty unlucky to have those go at exactly the same time as the EGR issue I would have thought. I'm concerned it's diff/gearbox related, but just this morning it occurred again and got louder when turning right and disappeared when turning left which kind of suggest suspension again... And oddly, just taking it out for a quick spin at lunch, it's gone again!
The cars booked into Jaguar again on Thursday, so hopefully we'll find out for sure, I just wondered if anyone had a similar experience here.
