hello all

i currently have a s6 that is killing my mrs on fuel. i want to get her something good looking with lots of kit at a reasonable price with a semi decent mpg. Ive been looking at the S type 2.7 Sport or XS. Many seam to be around the 80 - 100k mark.

what do i need to look out for on these cars? is the gear box really an issue? I know these have a cam belt, so when should this of been changed? is there anything specific i should be looking for? Ive been stung a couple of times so i want to get it right this time !

If you want a trouble free experience these are cars to avoid, they get lots of expensive problems at this mileage. Between 100 and 140K on my 2004 car I had two new turbos, one EGR valve, new torque converter and gearbox mechatronic module and loads of other little niggles. It started randomly losing a bit of water and nobody could trace it so I got shot of it at about 7 years old.

Great to drive, but not a quality product at all. Accessibility under the bonnet is terrible and all the fixings and fasteners are st and rust/corrode to bits so every job becomes and ordeal. They are also under powered and not particularly great on fuel, I think a petrol V6 or even V8 would have had much the same running costs over the long term.

At the time I found plenty of owners with similar gearbox issues in particular.

A later one than mine will also have the DPFs that Jaguar made a dogs cock of implementing too.

Cam belt is 105K and the rear belt for the high pressure fuel pump is 150K. Not many seem to make it to the 150K miles to need the latter done though!!

I bought a 90k one, ditched it at wbac 18 months later at 108k. the money I lost and paid for servicing even at mates rates could have paid for me to lease a new xf for 2 years... I got shot of it before it needed another 4 figure bill that was coming up, even having just had the Cambelt etc done 1000 miles before.

Put me off jlr for life
