Hi chaps

New member but long time lurker with a question of course.

Since buying my S Type, the reverse sensors have never worked, all I got was that 3 sec beep when selecting R which is the indication that there is a fault.

I knew that one of the middle sensors was duff, because it wasn't ticking when in R and the others were. It's a bumper off job to replace the sensors and the stupid spire fixings that Jag use were solid, so I kept putting it off.

I decided that it was time to fix it and got a new aftermarket sensor, which after some destructive surgery on the spire fixings, was fitted. On testing, now none of the sensors were ticking, but a sharp tap on the control module in the boot seemed to fix that....or I thought it had.

Now, 99% of the time when I select R I get a long beep, longer than the 'fault' beep, as if the sensors are picking up a close object. Sometimes it all works correctly.

Any ideas how to sort this without buying a new module, unless the concensus is that a new module is 100% the cause. Is there any way to check the module? Can these sensors be fitted upside down, what I mean is, the new sensor may be seeing the ground if it is 180 degrees out of whack?

Thanks chaps.

Hi

My original sensor problem was similar, and I thought it was the module.

Bought one second hand, and it wasn't the module, so put the original one back.

Keep meaning to advertise it.

I see your in the South West, so am I, if you want to try the module, and if it fixes the problem, we can sort out a price later?

Also I don't think I took the bumper off, I seem to remember loosening it, removing the lights, and going in through there? Its 12 months ago now, memory is fading!!

Hi John

I couldn't get in through the lights, is yours a pre facelift? I undid only the bolts from the passenger side and rear panel, giving me loads of room to get to the sensor. In future, it looks possible to undo the bottom plastic fasteners and with slender arms, get to them that way.

Where in the SW are you?

Hi

Mine is a post face lift (07).

When I did all the internet research all I could find with regards to removing the bumper was pre face lift, but all the bolts etc were in the same positions on mine.

Its 12 months ago now, so memory has faded, but I am 99% sure that I didn't remove the whole bumper, only the drivers side, and prised it forward to gain access through the lights from inside the boot. I seem to remember removing the right hand sensor to see / learn how the sensor fits / sensor cable is removed as it is visible right under the rear lights, before working blind on the right centre sensor.

I have a pdf doc with bumper removal instructions I could send if you let me have your e-mail address.

I've no problem getting the bumper off, except for the rust magnets that are the spire fixings that Jaguar insist on using around the car.rolleyes I did much the same as you, just moved the bumper enough to work on the sensor.

I have noticed that when I put my ear to the new sensor, it's clicking in a different pitch to the original ones, not sure if that's relevant to correct operation?

I may try a module from ebay on a sale or return basis, some sellers are happy to do that.

Hi

Compared to the cost of getting a mechanic to fix it, its worth buying a sensor to see if the problem is resolved.

Don't forget, I have a spare module if you want to try that as well.

Good luck!

The outer sensors are accessed by removing the rear light, the centre ones will need the bumper loosened as a minimum. My outer sensor was stuck fast and after removing the connector it required hammering out with a suitably sized chisel !

Hi John. Looks like my co-newbies and myself are off the naughty step at last. We have been in contact, but just posting this in case others think I'm a rude chap and not replied to your kind offer.
