Bought a 2000 XJR in 02/03 with 21K miles and Approved Used Jag 1 year warranty. Few small niggles sorted by local main dealer. 30K service no probs. In 10/04,at 37K, timing chain rattle examined by main dealer. Told it could be tensioner problems and car went in for repair. Armed with gassing station info about numerous problems with the tensioner designs on V8s, I was able to convince the dealer to do the work FOC. However when driving home after the work, the car went on to limp home mode and was immediately returned to the dealer.
To cut a long story short, 3 weeks later the car was returned with a new engine!! I was told that the although the car was registered in Sept. 2000, the engine was probably built in late 1999 and was a nikasil bore engine. The bores were now damaged giving low compession to 2 cylinders. Once again my research, including gassing station, armed me with the details about the nikasil bore problems on these engines. After a lengthy debate with the dealer, I was able to persuade them that the engine should be replaced FOC despite the fact that the car was out of warranty.
It just goes to show the power of these forums. Without this information, I'm sure I would have been fleeced for several grand! I hope everyone is now aware of these design faults on earlier XJ8s.

To my question:-
Do the steering wheel buttons (for music and cruise) light up at night on the XJR. Mine don't.
Thanks,
MJK

MJK, Glad to hear you got your car sorted at the right price I hope I can get the same results if it ever happens to me.

With regards to the steering wheel buttons, they don't light up on my '98 XJR... although, as my airbag warning light has been showing for the past two months I can't guarantee that my electrics are spot on

The Dealer sounds like they played ball. Who are they?

Glad you're all sorted.

As for your question, no idea.
