Hi all

I am viewing a 1967 series 1 FHC E-type tomorrow. The owner doesn't know if the car is matching numbers so can anyone tell me how I can check when I view the car? Is the engine number and gearbox number easy to locate or are they difficult to access? If anyone has any reference pictures that would also be really useful.

Thanks

Trevor

I think that for a 67 car the engine number should be very clearly visible on the head, if you look at the valley between the cam shaft covers at the front there's a vertical surface where it comes up to meet the covers for the drive sprockets, the engine number should be stamped on here. The engine number on the block should be on the side underneath the inlet manifold.
For the later engines (from 68 IIRC, but past my area of experience) the number on the head was dropped (presumably because of too many failures) and the engine number moved to being on the bellhousing mounting flange on the exhaust side.
Sorry no idea where any of the other numbers would be on an E.

RH Front of "picture frame" should show a number stamped into it, just inboard of the RH shock absorber top mounting.

There should be a plate with 4 pop rivets under the rh bonnet lock in the engine compartment, showing all numbers relative to that car.

Just above the brake and clutch resevoirs (rhd) you may see a small plate with 2 pop rivets and finally for a FHC above the rear number plate should be a small plate secured by 2 pop rivets.

Body and chassis numbers should match to the plate under the rh bonnet lock. You wont be able to see the gearbox number with the car complete.

Try XKE Data, it might be registered

Best of luck

That's a casting number on the cylinder head. That one is at the rear of the engine. There should be the engine number at the other end of the cylinder head.
If you are hoping to check if a Jaguar is a matching numbers car there are normally 4 numbers that are "matched"
The engine number, I think that on a 67 car this should be stamped on in 2 places, one on the block underneath the carbs and the other on the cylinder head at the front wall above the valley between the cam covers.
Then there is the chassis number, this was the one described as being on the picture frame, google for "jaguar etype picture frame" and it will give you some pictures so you'll know what you are looking at.
Thirdly the gear box number, which E600 said you'd not be able to check easily with the gearbox in the car.
Lastly the body number. I've no idea where this is on an E-Type, they aren't my hobby.

The casting numbers on the engines are sometimes useful when spotting "replacement parts". There are archaists in the XK community that have built up sets of casting numbers matched to ranges of engine numbers that can be used to check things sometimes.

Here a not very good picture of where the engine number is on a cylinder head, this is from a spare XK150 head I have sitting on the shelf so it's missing the cam covers.

Being an XK150 the engine number is of the for Vxxxx-y, V4634-8 in this case. A series 1 4.2 E-Type's number should be of the form 7Exxxx, on the XK150 head the -y (-8 on mine) denotes the compression ratio, I don't know whether this is also true on an E.
See http://www.jag-lovers.org/xk-lovers/library/engine... which also has some more details on where to find engine numbers.
