X Type which diesel best to go for - also auto or manual - 2.2 now just coming into budget at a stretch, however what are pros and cons? - Heard the 2.2 is stronger and worthwhile inc in grunt but suffers from later ex regulations which can be troublesome

If auto, can the J gate be held in various gears?

Any recom mods to exhaust to enhance performance / economy?

I had a 2.2 for 8 years & took it from 20 to 110k miles. Not one single serious issue. Mine was a 55 plate so it didnt have a dpf or an electric egr valve. I think the 2.2 has stronger drive shafts & clutch over the 2.0, plus the 6 speed manual box. Great car it was. Also i towed a heavy caravan. But it was still on its original clutch & dmf when i sold it & showing no signs of wear.

I have had a 2.2 engine manual estate 2005 for last 2years and 5 months. The car was on 102k miles and now on 165k miles. Absolutely no problem, and pulls like a train! The engine is a bit noisy when started, but this is common with this (Ford) engine. The torque is very good, and even though I have not towed with it, this would be an ideal car to do so. No real issues with anything other than the window waist seals /rubbers on the doors needed to replacing as they bubble from rust. Fiercely expensive! However try Hatfields Jag dealers in Hull, as they offer a discount. Enjoy the Jag

Reviews seems to suggest that the 2.2 isnt worth the extra power because of the loss of fuel economy that you get.

I dont think the 2.0 gets a good name in terms of long term reliability though.
