are there any indi traders specialising in X types in the Midlands, for realistic prices?

Any pros and cons choosing auto or manual, 2.0 or 2.2?

Budget is sub 3k for less than 90k doc miles

I understand the DMF are an issue - what symptoms and at what miles - cheapest replacement? (DMF or SMF equivalent) - are auto boxes usually good for 150k miles on both 2 & 2.2 around 2005 age?

Any other worries or prevalent rust issues underneath?

I see one or two 2.2 Se for sale around 2k, but most over 3k - with similar miles..am i missing something?

My target ideally would be a 2.2d SE with history and sub 80k miles for near £2.5k, it looks tight - realistic?

Any PH members with a Silver + cream leather example, feel free to contact me (V low mileage well serviced 3.0 considered)

2.2s like clutches and EGR valves. The 18" wheels are fragile, and the rear suspension can creak.

I have had a 2.0 d SE estate from new - 86,000 miles in just over two years with no clutch issues (or any others). Replaced it with a 2.2d Sovereign Estate which had 23,000 on the clock when I bought it - after 2 months (3,000 miles) the clutch started to slip. I had this replaced by Jaguar under warranty. Now the car has done over 100,000 miles on the replacement clutch and still going strong with no issues. Otherwise, had to replace the EGR at 45,000 - again no problems since - again I suspect it could have been down to the first owner's driving style and possibly type of diesel used - I avoid using supermarket fuel having read much advice.

Otherwise a new front NS wheel bearing and front springs (offside one broke) at 127,000 miles are the only other costs apart from routine servicing.

Both were/are great cars, the 2.2 is more economical and relaxed with the 6 speed gearbox. If they still made them, I would buy another in a heartbeat!

Unsure, as I had a 2.2. Cost me about £350 per month in parts and labour over 7 months - 55 plate bought in july 2013 with 56k on the clock. It was bought to keep the miles down on my last XF. Doubt I'd do it again.

is there a more dedicated uk x type forum?

The egr valve - what is it and what is replacement cost?

Any X Type Indi specialists near Kettering Northants for sales and service?

I am considering moving away from an old beloved Alfa GTV to get 99% dependable touring + everyday driving and v sensible maintenance cost - the 2 examples above are at the extremes - any more owners?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. Takes some of the exhaust gases and pumps them back throught the engine. It's about £150 for the part and easy to fit. It's right at the front on the left looking back at the engine.

I've ran a 2006 X-type for exactly 2 years now and I'm really enjoying it.

Save for an O2 sensor, it's only needed regular serving and the usual consumables.

It is a petrol 3.0 however, my 8500 miles a year just doesn't warrant a diesel. The AWD came in very handy this last January / February. smile

obviously the power of 3.0 is v tempting, however I am trying to avoid a complicated set-up vulnerable to expensive problems eg awd - I am also assuming that a Ford diesel must be bullet proof? - went in a friends 55 Mondeo 2.0 tdi on dual for hundred miles and easily got 60mpg cruising at max legal speeds! - I am assuming v6 to be more like half that, which does have an impact.

Is 3.0 noticeably quick, or just satisfyingly brisk? - The TDis turbo rush and torque fool you into thinking it is quick, as it pushes you back in the seat.

Re the recirc valve, sounds awful iea with regard to economy and performance? - Do people modify this arrangement with any worthwhile benefits?

Depends on who you ask. It's easy to be fooled by a turbo diesel when it spools up, but the performance figures don't lie.

The 3.0 is two seconds quicker to 60 than the 2.2d and three seconds quicker than the 2.0d. I'd guess the in gear acceleration times would be closer, but overtaking in the V6 is quick and safe. The AWD power train makes the car a little heavier than it would be if it was FWD, but I like its rear bias (about 62% iirc).

In the two years I've owned mine, it's whole ownership mpg has been 29.5 which is pretty darn good, thanks in most part to my commute which is mostly quiet DC.

What is your likely use and mileage if you don't mind me asking?

To add to some of the questions above - The EGR as I understand it is primarily there to comply with emissions requirements. You certainly notice reduced power when it isn't working properly. As you may have noticed, I cover a lot of miles in my car - approaching 200,000 between the two X-types I have owned. The 2.0d averaged around 42mpg over the 86,000+ miles, my current 2.2d is better by around 4 mpg and IF I am not in a hurry, often get up to 50mpg on a run, filled up Friday on way home having completed 686 miles since the previous visit to the pump. It is quick enough to overtake safely in all but supercar spaces and I have a second set of wheels with winter tyres which transform the road-holding and traction in the worst of the weather including snow. As I said before, if I needed to replace it I would have bought again if still produced, but as mine is still going strong, I wont be parting with it anytime soon!!
