Can anyone recommend a fault code reader for an S Type R - developed a misfire and want to at least eliminate some of the potential causes

Dodgy coil pack is the likely culprit. I had two go on mine. Without a code reader, the easiest way to find a bad one is to disconnect the coils one by one until you find one that doesn't make a difference to the engine running when disconnected. Good news is the coil packs are only 30 quid or so.

If you have an Android phone or tablet Torque is a good app to diagnose with a Bluetooth ELM dongle.

I'm going to change the plugs (was on my to do list) and check the coils as I go, got two spare (used but checked as ok) coils sitting in the garage.

Whatever happen I'm going to invest in the iCarsoft, peace of mind in having a fault code reader ready and waiting
