I have a chance of buying a MK2 it hasnt been on the road for a couple of years but looks pretty good and it is a SA import about 2003 when it was restored.
I always wanted a Car that was the same age as me and this one fits the bill but I know nothing about them.

Its a 3.4 mate, Looking at the images you will be throwing alot of money at this MK2 to bring it up to scratch, Its over 7K on the bidding and hasnt met the reserve, First thing i noticed is the interiors a mess, Dash lower trim hanging off, Lower steering column cowl missing, Seats not leather, Self tappers used on the N/S/F door card? It has an autobox speed hold switch on the dash, My guess is thats for the overdrive so it is most probably a converted auto and also wont be a numbers matching car if thats your thing (Not mine personally as my 3.8 is a converted auto but was reflected in the price + you get a wider transmission tunnel so gearbox/Clutch removal is a doddle rather than an engine out job) The Horn push on steering wheel is the later type after 1963, The woodwork looks abit of a mess. Bodywise just off the images it wants four door bottoms and bootlid repairs and god knows what else you will find as to me it looks like it had a poor 'Restoration' and MK2's can be made to look nice with plenty of plod, As for structural condition mine spent nearly all its time in a hot climate but has still had to have front x member/ Crowsfeet and the front floors are a bit thin in places due to years of water ingress through perished door and 1/4 light seals so a thorough inspection of this one is recommended as MK2 body shells cost a fortune to put right. Being a 59 model it should have the recessed sunvisors, Pendant throttle pedal, 100psi oil pressure gauge (it has'nt) and flat headlamp lenses (it has'nt) Black painted centre dash etc. Doesnt state PAS so assume it hasnt, Non PAS MK2's are a chore as the steering is so low geared, Back to transmission its either going to have a moss (Which it should) or a later all synchro, Moss's are abit slow and agricultural but are strong with long gearlever throw, The all synchros are better but still have a long lever throw, Moss overdrives are stronger than the compact type used on the all synchro. So to summarise the above its not an original car in my opinion, Its a converted auto, It needs a full retrim, Wood needs sorting, Requires body repairs and a repaint then your into sorting other mechanical stuff. IMO the way the price is going for this and what you would have to spend on it i would give it a miss and try to find a more original better car for probably less money than this ones going to cost to sort out ( I sold my low mileage- 52K, Numbers matching 1963 3.4 MOD last year for 6K, The plate was worth 3K! It was mechanically spot on and just needed straightforward body restoration, retrim and paint, Saying that the 1st person to view it bought it) Sorry if all this is a bit messy but im no editor and i'm knackered having just finished a long shift.

Excellent summary and good advice from KlunkT5.

Looks like a money pit to me and you'd be better off spending more on a better example.

A bad Mk2 is a VERY expensive car to sort out and you'll end up disillusioned. A good one is a joy to own.

Good luck whatever you decide.

it came in from South Africa in 2003 and was restored and then sold in 2008 at Auction.
I think I will leave this one I am just sorting my "toys" out at the moment so once they have gone I might look for a more sorted car but the prices seem to be rising fast.
