I have always fancied an XJR and have come across two

The grey is a private sale with 33,000 miles but has not been used much for 2 years - the other is a main dealer sale with 12 month Jag warranty and full pre-sale inspection etc

And the silver car is one owner FSH at the same dealer

But I am not a huge fan of silver but the car sounds as if it is a mint example with unblemished records

HELP!! I sway from the grey one to the sensible but slightly boring silver colour as I think XJR's look better in dark colours

Thanks

Take a test drive, or wait it out! I'm not too sure about the XJ, but if it were me I'd not fancy it without a warranty.

Agree with Mr Turner but agree with you about colour.

Grey & buy a warranty yourself?

Or buy my silver 01 plate and save yourself a few quid
Thanks

I'd like a few more details..
How much are they and their mileage
How long has the private owner owned the car for.
You sound like you prefer the Grey one, always go for the one you think looks prettiest, your the one that has to look at it every day.

The Grey has 33000 miles and £17000
Car has stood idle for two years but serviced today
Three owners
The silver is 42000 miles at £18500 with a 12 month warranty and year road fund tax
Being sold by a main Jaguar dealer so fully inspected etc
One owner and serviced at the same dealer on the same day every year (almost )
I called a Jag dealer and spoke to a very helpful sales guy who said that the silver car sounded an excellent choice and I should compromise on the colour as few cars come with such impeccable history
That's an opinion and I think I am tending to move there too

Silver one sounds a touch over priced but that first year Jag warranty assuming its the full monty one not the cut down version is worth having. My XJR had a shade under £6k of warranty work in the first year - I bought it as approved used from a dealer when it was 6 years old with 38k on the clock.

I prefer the darker colour but if its sat for 2 years there is a good chance the air suspension is buggered and thats silly money to repair when it goes wrong. Over that time it will have fully deflated and the car will have been sat on the stoppers , I'd be worried about deterioration of seals, gaskets etc as well. Id always prefer a regularly run car over one thats been sat for a while unless it was very cheap and that one isnt.

This is mine

I'd probably leave both and keep looking, the Grey one could have problems as mentioned above and you don't like the Silver one, plus Silver XJR's look like X-types imo.....

I would not spend a significant sum of money on a car without a warranty, unless I was also able to buy my own warranty...too risky in my view, especially with more modern cars which are increasingly reliable but complex.

Like the OP, I like dark exteriors and light interiors. I would not want the silver XJ: the darker..lunar grey?..is much nicer. After running in succession 2 S-Types with dark/light combo for 14 or so years, when it came to replacement last year with an XF I wanted the same combo plus a warranty and bought via a JMD, which I did. I was really lucky; for me the perfect combination is emerald fire/ivory and the car I purchased is emerald fire/barley , so pretty close. Even better in some ways is it's a 5.0 V8 Portfolio. As the previous two S-Types were the 4.0 V8 and 4.2 V8 I was also keen to keep to a V8 but did not expect to be able to do so, rather expecting to end up with a 3.0S diesel. So, I'm happy on all fronts. I suppose the moral is that they car that you want is out there, finding it may be the problem.

I think the last edition XJR or TDi Sport in silver, lunar or black looks the biz.

Haggle, walk & haggle some more. Don't buy without warranty.

Agree however, if it isn't exactly what you want, walk. You may never find it as these cars are getting older and most are high milers, but that's the deal.....

I had a long chat with Glasgow Jaguar and he said compromise on the colour to get the right car
If it is indeed impeccable history and mint then bite their arm off as the good ones are getting fewer and fewer
And the demand exists for the right XJR all day long
Silver not the most popular but it's getting the right car that's key
That was his unbiased opinion
